another request for advise (folder)

Hello guys, I need some advise form the resident blade aficionados. I need a new folder. I have an old Kershaw linear action folder and it is in desperate need of replacement. The lock-up is terrible, and I don’t trust it anymore.

The criteria are as follows: the lockup must be tight and secure (not lock back), the handle must me very positive and suitable for alternate grip positions (no more than one finger groove), the blade must be a plain edge and be in the range of 3”-4”, the steel must be top (sharpening ease is not an issue, be it must be capable of becoming scary sharp), and finally it must not exceed $200US. Appearance and manufacturer are irrelevant to me, as long as it is made well.

What are your recommendations? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

REKAT Carnivore or the smaller Carnivore Cub would be a good choice I think. I like MOD's also, I just picked up a Deiter CQD Mark II and I am really pleased with that.

If you've had it with liner locks, check out Benchmade's Axis lock folders.
You can find several models under $200 US.
Or check out the SOG Noght Vision with their Arc lock mechanism.

Peace and may the Force be with you.

Along with the mentioned REKAT Carnivour & Carnivour Cub, you might also take a good look at the REKAT Pioneer II.

It is available in 4 different blade-styles, either "silver" or black, with black G-10 scales, and dual stainless liners.

By your specs I would recomend a Spyderco Lum Chinese. If you are willing to spend more, the small CRK Sebenza is incredible.

In your price range I think that you should get ethier a Microtech LCC M/A or a Benchmade 710 with M2 blade steel. I have been carring a LCC as an edc for a while now and I am very happy with it.

well, personally i would get a benchmade AFCK with the D2 steel, and the black plain edge - meets all your criteria, and you can get them from www.newgraham.com for, like $85 - a hell of a deal - and , imho every bit the knife you will pay $150+ for - its just cheap because its a discontinued model - some other good 1's would be the MT LCC, any of the REKATS are good, IMHO, spyderco terzuola and centofante, and gunting are all good knives in your price range - also the CRKT crawford-kasper folder, at $50, would be hard to beat at $100 imho - BM stryker, and emerson CQC7(or the BM CQC7) are good too - lotsa choices out there - personally though, if i could only have 1 knife, w/a blade 4"or less, it would be my AFCK - smooth action, good steel, good design, sweet looking, what more could ya want for $85??? i paid a little more than that for mine, about 6 months ago, but it has been worth every penny - i honestly think #2 would be the CRKT kasper folder, too- 1 friend compared the kasper to my CRK seb, and still cant believe the seb is the more expensive knife - they are well made, only negative is they are heavy - good luck to ya, probably just confused ya

If AUS8 steel is sufficient for your intended task, the Outdoor Edge Magna is an outstanding hard-use folder. It is well-fitted, tank-tough and provides a 4" blade for less than $40 delivered (via Bayou Lafourche). The Magna is the knid of knife that you can use to sharpen a stake - and then drive the stake home with the knife.

Above that price there are many choices with better steel by Benchmade, Spyderco and others for less than $100.

I agree with SIFU, you can't beat an AFCK. My wife would even thank you cause that would be one less for me to get.

Al Mar SERE 2000: You really cannot beat this knife. It is tough, simple (the fewer parts the better!). You will be happy with this one! Check around as you can find them for under $140.

You can find my pix demonstrating the size comparison between these 3 knives, along with my review of the CQDII here: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum44/HTML/000004.html

The LCC is an incredible value. I'm extremely happy with my 2nd gen, which I've owned for quite some time now. There are alot of really good knives being mentioned in this thread, but you'll get the most knife for the money with the LCC.

I would second the REKAT recomendation, and also suggest anything by benchmade in M2.

Let me suggest one of my new favorites, the MOD tempest. I love that thing. I paid only $100 for it, the lockup is GREAT and the quality is outstanding. I would also say that within your criteria you have a HUGE number of knives to pick from. It would be much more helpful if you narrowed your choices down to abour 4 knives, and let us go from there. Another that I really like is the BM ARES (must be GREEN!!!) and the Spyderco Bob Lum G-10 Tanto.

I don't think there have been any bad suggestions yet.

I would add the Kershaw Ken Onion Boa to the list for you to consider. The shape and texture are positive enough not to slip while providing comfort in multiple grip positions. The integral guard on the blade makes it impossible to slip forward no matter how hard to thrust. And the blade is an outstanding recurve design made from 440V. This knife takes a scary edge and holds it for a long time.

For the price you mentioned or less, a Kershaw 1416-XXL Starkey Ridge would be nice.

Take a look at the Spyderco military. Excellent steel and lockup. The best production folder for the money.

I would go for either the, Spyderco Military/Starmate or the Microtech LCC.
