My Dad just gave me a box of assorted crotch woods and burls from his maker days past. All woods were either from when he cut right-of-ways for aerial phone lines back in the 70's & 80's, or from a local wood mill he had do some of his breakdown and resawing work since he never had the tools to do so. So the only thing I know "for sure" is that this is not an foreign exotic, and it "most definitely" came from southern Wisconsin. There is some interesting chatoyance I captured in video, but the resolution isn't that great from imgur.

What local sawmill, was it up near Lomira?

I just had Zebrawood in the shop. Sure looks a LOT LOT LOT like that Zebrawood. Not just the striping but the pores as well.

Ha! I said Zebrawood, too. Buy my Dad insists that it came from Deppeler's in Monroe. I have no reason to doubt him, since he hasn't purchased any wood for projects since the late 1980's, and I don't know (and neither does he) how he would've come across an exotic. He told me Deppeler's often cleaned out fencerows for farmers, and clearcut timbers for till, so no telling what oddball "piss elm" (a tree that he doesn't know the species of) could've ended up in the shorts bin where he got his craft woods from.

But like everything...anything is possible I suppose!
