After taking my lovely SAR4 se out on a few excursions I decided to do some customizing and make it a bit more hunting/fishing oriented. She was a bit of a BBW so I trimmed the but down and gave her a sexy choil where the talon hole was.

I LOVE IT!!!

I hated the original choil - big enough to waste blade space but too ssmall to use. Yours is perfect. Great, great mod!

I personally like your modified SAR4 WAY better. Good job.

The choil and Talon Hole on the SAR4 prevented me from buying. I kept looking at the AD trying to determine if it could be modified similarly. But, never felt it would turn out right.

Yours "Looks" right!!!

I would like to see pics in hand. How does it feel and balance now?

Perfection....I know its Jerrys trademark and all but the talon holes and unusable choils deter me from buying many of the offerings. The new HACK albeit thick is GW perfection. Very nice job. That is something I would buy.

I agree, that's a great looking mod. And functional too! I believe you've got the perfect SAR4 there.

nice.
I think about the same mod, also...
could you just elaborate on the actual feel of the knife?
thanks

Wow. As I sit here with a SAR4 in hand, I'd hesitate to add that if you (you the forum-reader you, not the OP) would always have a finger in that choil, the handle is STILL too long.

I get why the SAR handle is long - to be able to whack things with the butt-end. Hence the SAR name. But once you modify it for less SAR-like work, the handle becomes far too long. (OTOH, many Busse handles are far too long. The 3-series handle, with the protruding tang, is silly-long. The SF handle has always seemed long to me as well. But I digress.)

Cool mod!

I have to say I think this is my favorite knife now! As for Ikkyo's request, I feel that this knife when not choked up on is more responsive and flows better in hand now. The curved handle always felt very comfortable to me but all the material behind my hand at the butt where it was widest felt cumbersome for lack of a better term. now that it is chopped off shorter and rounded off, the balance is greatly improved and feels great to use. For the choil I used a 1" diameter drum sander which produced the right radius to remove the material between the talon and blade. When I grip the choil my thumb lands on the jimping (spl?) providing a solid grip and nimble feel. Very natural feeling. Much better for any detailed task. This is going to be coming deer hunting with me this season. Then I can really put it to the test!
Cheers!

G R E A T ! ! !

Based on the picture, it seems that you've got the SAR4 as it was meant to be. One of the best mods I've seen. Great job, man!

Looks good and I don't mean to bring it down any but isn't it basically a SAR 5 now?

The profile looks great.

Now, plane it down to under 3/16" thickness, and I'll take it! :D
