Well, there was some delay from Knifecenter.com but UPS delivered my Benchmade 800 AFCK (plain blade) today -- along with my two Timberline Mini Pit Bulls. All around, the knives are very much pleasing to me. I have made a purchase that I am happy with.
The AFCK is a MONSTER! Boy, I'm glad I didn't get it with serrations, 'cause that thing is a lot o' length to sharpen. I will say this: the edge is not all I want out of a knife, so I will be redoing it. It simply doesn't stand up to my simple everyday test: does it 'catch' my finger when I gently run it along the edge? I've found, though, that MOST production knives I've bought or handled don't have a good enough edge right from the distributor. My Spyderco Delicas have all needed re-sharpening when I got them. There was one exception, it was a Delica I got for a girlfriend. It was recent enough that it had the Boye detent in the lock lever, and it was NICE and sharp when it was new, to the point that I sent it right out to her without resharpening it when it arrived.
The Mini Pit Bulls by Timberline are EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. They have a really sexy blade shape, they are nice and thick and tough, they have a nice weight, and torx-screw handle scales (I now hate handles that cannot come apart). They fit nicely into a well-designed sheath. For under thirty bucks, these are really excellent knives.
My Benchmade 100SH2O is on back-order. I'm really looking forward to getting that one, and seeing what I think of the H-1 steel. I'm not planning to rust-torture-test it, but it'll be nice to know that *they* have, and that the knife withstood it.
Thanks to all who ever recommended the AFCK. You were not wrong.
