I am new to this list and pretty much an amatuer knife enthusiast. I like quite a few others cannot sharpen a knife worth a darn. I've tried stones, the Chefs Choice machine, Lansky System, and even those cheap gizmos you pull down the blade. Can never get that blade very sharp!
Does anyone send their knife out to a professional sharpener? I have a couple of knives that I hesitate to use because I don't want to dull them.

Get the sharpmaker by spyderco.

Everyone can sharpen knives with this unit. Watch the video it comes with, you are good to go with very little practice.

Go for it, use those knives.

i have a sharpmaker and the things are really easy to use, i would definitely recommend getting one. the only time i take something to get profesionally sharpened is when i mess up the edge on one of my large camping knives real bad - i just don't have the patience to take out a bad chip or ding in my blade.

what everyone said. Steved, you should also consider practising on cheap $1 knives first, before attempting on your "good" knives. Oh, and be very, very careful NOT to round off the tip on the sharpmaker (on the downward stroke, stop just before reaching the tip). You can then sharpen the tip on the flats.
