I consider myself to be Ok at sharpening. I use japanese wet stones and I love strops. But I ran into a Problem. I got a Emerson super7 from a friend and I guess he was trying to sharpen it and it's alittle old and the edge is ruined, it almost looks round. can't cut a thing. I have a bunch of Emersons, but I maintain my knives so I never ran into this. So the edge is rounded and dull, So whats the best way and equipment to get a factory like Edge back on that knife without sending it in, it's Chisle ground as you probably know, and it can't be messed up anymore that it is. any help is very very apprecieated, it will be a great knife once it's fixed. Thanks

Sounds like you will have to start off with a coarse stone to get the bevel back and then progress up to finer stones. If you use something like the Sharpmeker it is going to take a while. Depending on how beat up this knife is it might be worth it to send it back to Emerson for sharpening and tune up service then you can just keep it sharp. Nothing is more trouble than a knife someone has let go dull.
Sorry I see you use Jap water stones. Don't have any of those. You are going to have to get a coarse stone to get it started.

The best methods and equipment I can think to use on an extremely dull knife would be, in order of my preference:

1. A belt sander with about a fairly course grit belt, say 320.

2. Edge Pro starting with the 120 grit stone.

3. Free hand with any extra course stone.

well i guess I'll send it in, It's 5 bucks and they will bake it like new. cheaper than getting new stones or spending hours days and days probably on a sharp maker
