Another Sharpmaker Question

I have been using my 204 for over a year; excellent product.

However, I notice that the corners, especially on the white stones (which see the most use), are beginning to flatten.

So the question is, when is flattened TOO flat? I don't seem to be able to get the hair-popping edge on my serrated blades like I used to. No problem on plain blades as the flat surfaces are still, well; flat.;)

So what's the deal? Do I need to use a different technique? Replace the stones? What?

you could just order the replacement stones, but consider just buying a whole new kit because depending where you would get the stones from it would be cheaper probably just to buy a whole new kit.

Okay.

But it seems to me these should have lasted longer. The video, I believe, makes mention of the fact that the white stones should last almost forever- or words to that effect.

I've used this 204 to sharpen/maintain the edges on an old style, fully serrated Endura, a SAK (both are EDC), and my wife's paring knives. IOW, nothing out of the ordinary.

I would like someone involved with the Spyderco company to answer this; under normal use conditions, how long are these stones supposed to "last"?

Dunno if this is the case with yours, but I had a similar problem when I first got my sharpmeker:
I was using too much force.

I didn't _think_ I was GRINDING the blade against the stones, I just thought I was using an appropriate amount of pressure. And the corners were starting to flatten. Then there was a lot of discussion here about "stripping" the diamond rods with too much pressure, and I looked at how much force I was using. Turns out that half the force (or even less) got better results, "loaded" the stones slower, and I haven't had any problems with flattening the corners since.

Again, that may not be the problem with _your_ stones, but you might give it a try.

I have had my sharp maker for years now. I bought my original sharpmaker in about 78 or 79 from a fishing/ hunting show in Denver.
I think I still have one of th original stones. It still works fine. My problem has been breaking them. Dont let them clank they will chip. But I cant say I have ever experience wear on them. I wash them every so often, and I have had to replace a few stones. ( now I have 2 extra white stones, they are the ones I usually chip )

Make sure you wash the stones as recomended. It makes all the difference in the world. When the blade seems to glide on the stones it is time to wash them. When the stones are clean and white you can hear and feel them removing metal for that UNBELIEVABLE edge!

Hope that helps

Copis,

I clean the stones regularly with Comet and a green scotchbrite pad.

I think Grover may be onto something, as I use a fair amount of pressure when sharpening/touching up.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I guess my question wasn't important enough to warrant attention from the Spyderco folks who cruise here.

Yeah, I could have called 'em; but that's not the point.

Hi Dayton3. The gray/brown stones will wear. I have never seen a white stone wear....ever. If you will send them to Warrantee & Repair, we'll replace them. I'd like to see the stones.
