Ok.... here is another of this pancake style sheath. I like them but they need to be tooooo FAT to work well.

I REALLY need a little pattern help to make a pouch style sheath. I have traced 2 knives and added 1/2" on the blade edge, cut, sewn and TOO SHORT.... Ugh..... what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for thoughts on that!

Here is the latest.... it's for my new (to me) Bailey!

I have not made a ton, but honestly, for a fold over taco style, I leave well over an inch on bigger knives. It is so much easier to cut more away, then to cry and have it be too short.

I definitely have not made a sheath and stitched it up, and then had the knife not fit.

If you have the sheath made, and stitched, and the fit is just a bit too tight, you could try soaking the leather in warm water and stretching it out, then wet forming it. You can get a bit of give.

That said, I have only made about 4, including a bigger one for my Basic 11.

Nothing as nice as your sheaths.

It helps to think about how thick the handle is. On a knife with any kind of handle at all, you may need to add an inch just to have enough to go around the handle. One thing I like to do is to like the leather up and bend it over before cutting the other edge off the main piece of leather. The height is not difficult to cut, so I measure and cut that first, then wet the crease and bend over.

Sounds dirty there!

When you make your pattern, do you roll the knife over, or just flip it? Moose

An Inch?? Wow.. that explains a lot! I was WAY short!

I also didn't wet the bend first, which made it a lot tougher.... too stiff.

I'll try adding around an inch.

I like that sheath for the 11 and also the one for the GW (I think GW?).

Thanks

Ah, I see. Rule of thumb, easier to take off than to put on. Good luck. Moose

You could try doubling up the welt in the handle area to save the leather you already cut.
Looking at it from the cut side the sheath would be 5 layers thick by the handle (front, spacer, welt, spacer, back) and 3 thick by the blade.

Tricky to make holes in, but I hate tossing good leather :)

ETA: also, when you trace the knife, trace the face, the spine and then the back... that will help with the extra width.
And leave extra :D
