hey folks.. here's a few pics of a sheath i just finished up, for a fellow on another forum..

the knife is absolutley beautiful, it belonged to the gentleman's father and now him.. i was honored when he asked me to make a sheath for it... i think they compliment each other well..

it's is 9-10 oz. veg. tanned leather, hand stitched, wet-formed,dyed(black), and beeswaxed..

any feedback is always welcomed..

cheers.. Mike

please don't mind the left over beeswax in the stitching..

Very very nice, that knife is a beautiful piece.

What is your method of beeswaxing a sheath?

thanks man..

as for the beeswax.. i heat up the wax and the sheath, then spread/rub it in as evenly as possible.. then heat up again..

Do you notice any hardening of the leather afterwards vs before the wax treatment? I've been treating my sheaths to several coats of Mink oil soaked in with a hot hair dryer. There's been several folks that say that using just mink oil will make my sheaths more pliable rather than keeping them nice and stiff. And that's something I don't want, I want the leather to retain as much stiffness as possible to aid in knife retention. Sure, I understand that, with age, leather loosens up a bit, but I don't want to give it an extra hand.

oh yeah... it definitely hardens up really nice, and retains it shape.. even after just the wet forming and dyeing, it stiffens up... but you probably want to use some beeswax, if you're wanting to stiffen up..

I'm really considering it for my next knife sheath, maybe trying a mixture of beeswax and paraffin.
