I'm going to be renovating my shop. I currently have a cinderblock out building. The existing shop is 42x30' It also has a 42x16' overhang. The main shop has a concrete floor and 14' rafters. The overhang has a stone floor.

I'm going to be replacing the roof and pouring a new concrete pad under the overhang and enclosing it. I also am going to be pouring a 20' by 45' pad in front of the shop. My plan is to use the main shop for a metal/mechanics shop and the overhang section as a wood shop. The main shop will be open with the exception of a mezzanine for storage. I had hoped to install a car hoist but that may take up too much room. I'll have a car and several motorcycles/trials bikes stored in there so I need floor space. In the back of the wood shop, I intend to enclose a couple rooms for knife making. One for grinding and heat treating, the second clean room for assembly. In the wood shop, I'll have a bank of cabinets for a miter saw station. Behind these I have drafted a 3' wide hallway to be used for lumber storage and dust collection piping. I'm worried this is too narrow but I really don't want to go any wider or the table saw will be pinched as the space is long and narrow. The alternative would be to forget the hallway idea and open up the shop and just make a mobile sheet good rack and store boards on the wall somewhere. These cabinets still need to be wide though for the sliding miter saw. I have attached a youtube link showing a 3d walkthrough of the concept. The software I have didn't have all the shop tools so I had to make do with what was available. Don't laugh, the milling machine is a kitchen aid stand mixer. I'd like to get everyone's input. I'm aways from doing anything yet but am just planning things out. Below is a list of owned items and future/wants. the band saw subbed in for the disk sander and jointer.

I show a 4x6 outfeed table. This will likely have to do double duty as an assembly table. I know this isn't ideal but I'm not sure there is room for a second table. I'd like to replace my 10" ryobi planer with a good 15" planer but the area is probably too narrow and it would interfere with table saw. I may just get a Dewalt on a portable stand so I can pull it out when needed. Most of the stuff I make is small but I do want to be able to make cabinets and a dining room set. I can always store assemble pieces in the metal shop if need be.

Another option is to move the knife shop to the metal side under the mezzanine. This would open up the wood shop. To avoid the large window though, I'd have a total area of 15.5x10 for the cleanroom and the grinding room. This also means that my car would be stored closer to the garage door which isn't a bad thing.

Metal Shop Owned (28.5x37')
Metal Lathe
Surface Grinder
Tig/plasma cutter
Bandsaw
Drill Press
Buffer
80 Gallon Air Compressor
Parts Washer
Sand Blast Cabinet
Engine Hoist

Metal Shop Future
Milling Machine (Maybe) might just get a mini mill
Anvil and Forge (not likely)
Forge Press (Not likely)
car hoist (if room allows)
2x4 Fixture / welding table

Wood Shop Owned (15.5' by 37' not including 5' taken up by miter saw station and storage)
Table Saw
Router (mounted to table saw)
Planer (needs to be replaced. I'd like a 15" unit but probably don't have the room and will settle for a new dewalt)
Belt/Disk Sander
Drill Press
Bandsaw
sliding miter saw
radial arm saw (might scrap or just use as dedicated dado saw)
several shop vacs

Wood shop future
Jointer
Outfeed/assembly table
drum sander (maybe if room allows)
dust collector

Knife Shop (6x10 grinding room) (9x10 clean/assembly room)
Heat treat Oven
Temper Over
Grinders (2)
Buffer
Dewar
Vice
Drill Press
Vacuum setup for stabilizing and hybrid handles
Desk and material storage
kydex press

The shop seems big but once I start putting it together, space disappears fast. Especially in the wood shop where you need room to swing materials. Keep in the mind the area I have to worrk with is less than stated above as I have to put up interior insulated walls. I also want to have the air compressor and dust collector enclosed for noise.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

I changed the video to public.

I did up another idea by need to render a video. Moving the knife shop under the mezzanine seems to make a lot of sense. It opens up the wood shop and even provides more storage

Thank you, I was able to watch it. Did you use sketchup for that?

For me, one of the most useful tools is the milling machine. I would definitely recommend you get one.

The one thing I wish I had is a mop sink near or even in the grinding room. Maybe put a pocket door between grinding room and assembly room to make the space feel bigger. I think the long narrow hallway will not function well, I would fill it up and not be able to get to stuff, including the air compressor. I think the compressor should be easily accessible for draining. I don't like to leave the air valve open overnight, so I would at least want an easily accessible shut-off valve.

Layout 2 bigger wood shop

here's another layout. I made the mezzanine deeper and built my grinding and knife assembly room under it. This allowed me to make the wood shop much longer and wider which seems to work netter. I'll still need to find a place for the compressor and dust collector. I also like having the machine tools tucked in the corner. I may put up a retractable curtain just to contain the shavings and dust. The plasma cutter is so messy but with a proper table it should be ok.

I'd like to incorporate a small 2 piece bathroom but I'm in the country and don't have water. I was thinking about a small storage tank collecting rain water but it seems like a hassle. However, just having running water would be great. I'm in Canada so freezing is a concern. I have a back hoe so burying a tank behind the shop wouldn't be an issue.

I used Chief Architect for this.

It brings your lights and the the ceiling of reflected light closer which = free light.
Finish the ceilng there with white panels.

Put the compressor and dust collector outside in a doghouse lean to.
No need to have them inside, no need to hear them.

If you want running water and you have a backhoe, then underground plastic piping seems simple
Insulate the bathroom super super well, put a closer on the door, heat the bathroom. and the pipes with insulation and tracer tape.

Put in shutoffs and drains all over, so you can shut off and drain the water if you need to work on it or go away for some time.

I was thinking about putting the compressor and dust collector outside. The compressor has a 7hp 240 motor. I have to shut it off in the winter because it doesn't want to start if it's cold. That being said, I put synthetic oil in it and that helped.

I'm also toying with the idea of just using multiple shop vacs instead of a dust collector in the wood shop. I like the idea of those switches that turn on automatically. It'll just take up a ton of room with the shop vac and cyclone and bucket. I'd have dedicated ones for the table saw, miter saw, disk sander, and probably a mobile one for the planer, jointer and bandsaw. It would be cheaper for a dust collector I think.

I don't mean in a snowbank.

A small doghouse lean to.

You can heat that, or the compressor itself.

I have an air compressor in the house basement, but stupid high humidity means it shoots water.
