I always enjoy looking at shop pictures so I thought I’d post mine.
I have seen a few posts about small shops on here. I think mine might be the smallest yet. Inside dimensions are 8’ x 10’ I wanted to keep it under the building code, the size also makes it easy to heat. Right now it doesn’t feel too cramped but I still want to get a mill/drill and a real belt grinder. I suspect then it will seem much smaller. The machines are a Logan lathe, Leach surface grinder converted to 120v, Mastercraft 1 x30, And a jobmate drill press.

Where I spend most of my time.

Thanks for looking.

Hey Mark,
Good use of space. I like the assembly bench/work area with the drawers.

Where abouts in Ontario?

12th post since 2009... slow down bud.... lol.

I live a little north of Orillia.

I like to pace myself, don't want to run out of things to say:)

I like that! It may be small but I could see myself getting a lot done in there! My shop is in the garage, so there is more room, but I have to share space with the washer/dryer/laundry pile, kids' bikes and scooters, the lawn mower, family storage etc. so it feels really haphazard to me. Yours is well organized, and I'm a bit jealous of the surface grinder!! Mine is more like a couple different work stations scattered around the garage amongst the rest of the family stuff, but I keep it quite a bit more manageable than some garages I've seen.

Then of course there's the provisions corner.......never while grinding though:D

Cool stuff there guys. I'm planning on building a small shop this summer, thanks for posting the photos!

Mark, nice bench, you must be a jeweler. I like it!

Geez Jonny, where is the jerky and chips? I am guessing you start with the Sierra Nevada, have two, nxt in line is the blue moon, must be for the wife, then the buddies down the street see your garage door open and come through, so they get the Bud Light. The guiness goes good to fill you up after the Sierras and maybe with a nice cigar. Of course the PBR is for watching Nascar. With all that drinking you are doing, how do you fnd time to make any knives?! Kidding of course! ;-)

Looks like you have made do with your space quite well, but how do you keep all the dust and everything out of the laundry?

First of all, you're right the Blue Moon is for the wife (I like it too now and again), secondly, I only have one neighbor who is worth sharing my beer with, and he likes to drink the PBR with me:D I love all kinds of beer as any good bartender should, and I actually buy the Pabst because I like it........and because it's so cheap that I can afford more 2x72 belts for the grinder:thumbup:

As far as the laundry goes, well we don't keep the clean laundry in the garage, just the dirty so no worries there! Seriously, I'm constantly running a fan in reverse with a hepa filter on it and my home made shop vac dust collector, and I try to fire up the air compressor and vacuum every couple of days to do my "blow out the dust and suck it up" routine. It's not perfect but I make it work. One good lottery ticket and I'll build a real shop!

Good stuff, guys. I envy you the surface grinder and lathe, Mark. Pretty well equipped for a small shop. It must be cozy in there during those Canadian winters.

Jon, I concur with fast14's assessment of your beer supply. Including the remark about the cigar. One of these days maybe I'll come visit, bring a 6 pack of IPA. Nice shop.

Salem, no need to bring any.....if that picture I posted had been taken today you would have seen one half of one of the shelves is currently full of Lagunitas IPA:thumbup: I do rotate my flavors quite frequently:D

Great looking work space. I'm pretty sure it stays a little tidier when space is limited. Looks like some folder parts in the drawer, how about a few photo's of those as well. I have the same lathe in my shop, a hand me down from my great uncle. Paul

Cozy looking shop Mark. As a fellow Canadian wanting to help, I'll take that surface grinder off your hands to free up some room if you want. ;)

Jonny, the dust collector on the KMG is not connected to the shop-vac is it? :(

Thanks for the reply's guys. I'm not sure its easier to keep the small shop clean. It doesn't take long for things to start piling up, then I spent more time looking for things than working. So I have no choice but to keep it tidy.

I am a goldsmith. The bench is very useful it is very handy having all the small hand tools within reach.

I posted pictures of the last knife i completed here

:(

Thanks for the offer Patrice but i wouldn't want you to have to drive all that way:) Plus it was a gift from my wife:cool:

You definitely made some very good use of space. I particularly like the curved workstation/assembly bench and the oscillating spindle sander. The spindle sander seems like a great tool for shaping handles and grinding curves in the tang area - is it? Thanks for posting.
