which STAINLESS steels are tough (especially ductility wise) & are able to come close or hopefully even compete with carbon steels?
how are VG10, H1, G2, various AUS's in that aspect?
thanks! :D

It depends on which carbon steels you are talking about, some are quite brittle, more so than several stainless steels. If you mean the tougher carbon steels like A8, 5160, L6, etc., then no, no stainless knife steel can come close to them in regards to ductility and especially impact toughness. The carbon steels are often usually differentially hardened in larger knives which makes the difference again many times greater.

420 is a good tough stainless steel but it isnt that great for a knife as its quite soft.

BG-42 has a good reputation for being tough.
By the way, does anyone know of a good production folder that uses BG-42? (other than the Buck custom 110, the buck website says "Last day for Custom Knife Shoppe orders is December 13, 2004--until further notice")

SOG makes an "Autoclip" folder that comes in both BG-42 or AUS8. If you Google BG-42 Knife you should get a few hits in the first group.

AG Russell has a few models of the Autoclip available, however currently they only offer the large Autoclip with a partial serration.

Joshua, I think we're using different scales of comparison. BG-42 may be tough for a high-end super-wear-resistant stainless (compared with, say, S60V or ATS-34), but it's not even remotely tough compared to something like L6. It's not even tough compared to a relatively not-very-tough tool steel like D2, or even a low-end not-very-wear-resistant stainless like 440A, IMO.

Basically none. Why? Are you trying to decide on a knife?

i need a knife for rock climbing & general outdoor use, normally my knowledge of knives & steels is good enough however, since i will be carrying a lot of gear i have room for just one folding knife, i need it to have some kind of prying ability (light of course).
was thinking of my H1 Spyderco Salt1, but i don't know how ductile it is (& therefor how much prying in can take).
the steel has to be stainless, absolute top priority so no carbon steel, impact toughness isn't relevant.
other knives i have are in G2, VG10 & AUS6, all answer my needs for stain resistance & cutting, just need to choose one that can handle light prying & come back home in one piece.

Use something else for prying!! A good knife could save your life in a bad spot. I suggest the Spyderco Endura in serrated edge.Add.. especially if you are not carrying two knives as you should. Two is one, one is none.
