another survival use for altoids tin

Curious world. The author of that piece is in Argentina and he describes “cheapo tallow” candles as opposed to “parafine”.

It's the opposite here. Tallow candles used to be sold here as “survival candle” and no doubt now “bushcraft candle” by virtue of the fact you can eat them if need be. They were/are a lot more costly than a modern non-drip paraffin wax offerings of equivalent size. That's not just the survival / bushcraft gimmick inflating the price either. When I used to do a florist I'd see huge tree like cathedral candles at the wholesaler so big you could bear hug through to grannies little failing eyesight craft corner jobs. All of them way more expensive and often in triple digits. Where he is he says they tend to melt so he doesn't find them ideal. If you don't suffer that climate I think they're much better.

US Cavalry used to have microcrystaline candles that wouldn't melt in the heat... or that's what they claimed. they were expensive, so i never tried any.

they don't list them any more.

in my area, candles kept in a vehicle would be a melty puddle half the year, so they're a non starter.

actually, I believe he is saying that the cheap tallow candles they have there tend to melt, and that parafin, or beeswax would be better...

"Right now, in Argentina we have a very hot summer and the candles (cheapo tallow) tend to melt. Will replace those (when used) with better parafine o bees wax candles."

Affirmative, but that negates nothing I said.

Where he lives tallow candles are cheapo whereas here they are much more expensive. I believe tallow makes a candle with superior properties, save for in climates like his where they melt to easily. I don't know if he would come to the same conclusions if it were not for that. :)
