I am looking at two knives for everyday light to medium useage, reallizing there is a price difference I am still torn between a Benchmade 710 and a Buck Mayo TNT 172. I am aware of the material differences but still wonder which will hold up the best. I am leaning towards the Buck if for no other reason, the coolness factor and the manufacturers reputation along with my experience with Buck knives over the years.

Anyones opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If either one fails I heard that all you have to do is send it back for repair or replacement. Buck is especially noted for this! I am not all that sure about Benchmade but, I think they back em 100% as well.

I purchased a Mayo TNT a while ago from Ira Wood inc. It is a nice knife, but have also read good things about the 710. The Mayo is light and strong and sharp. Try the search as there was a recent thread about some plusses and minusses of this knife. I am pleased with mine and feel that it is a good value. Hope this helps. Cordially, Bradley

i recently purchased a buck/mayo tnt from ira woods too. the framelock was really stiff, but i think has lightened up a bit or my thumbs have toughened. but i love the knife. classy looking, not scary. also the little smaller blade over the 710 to me is a plus. the fit and finish on the tnt are flawless and the action super smooth. i would highly recommend the tnt, but then again i havent handled a 710 very much.

I had a 710 for a while. It honestly didn't blow my skirt up too much. It was okay, but it was just too skinny for me. It might be ironic, but I EDC a Buck/Mayo 172 now, and wouldn't trade for a 710 again if given the choice. I like the fact that I can take the knife apart and it doesn't void my warranty. I also like the F&F on this knife as its just plain as perfect as a production knife gets. The lock is secure, the action is slick, its just plain nice. You can also have the scales smoothed over if you want, but the squared off scales never bothered me much. I like it. Get what you want, but given the two to choose from I'd go with a 172 any day of the week.

Pretty different knives in size and style. The 710 might be more than you need for "light to medium use", while the 172 is very robust for its size. Tom made a great design and Buck built it well.

I have a BM 710 , I bought it at the end of last year. I don't own the Buck Mayo but I'm a big fan of Titanium Framelocks too. I do have a Camillus Dominator and it is by far one of my favorites. Probably for the same reasons you like the Mayo, the Dominator is built well , but light to carry and classy looking.

IMO the 710 would be a good medium -heavy duty work knife. I would have to say that it's one of those knives that if you could only have one knife, the 710 would be it.

If cost is an issue, you would be getting a great knife if you bought the 710 and you wouldn't be disappointed.

If price doesn't matter, then get the one you like the most.

i have a BM710, and i have hold the Buck Mayo TNT 172...
I would (and i did actually:D ) choose the BM710 everytime !

But the guy that let me hold is TNT 172 was saying exactelly the contrary !

So what about going out in a shop and try both?

The only thing that I dislike about the 710 is the G-10 scales.
They are the most plastic feeling G-10 that I have ever encountered.
When you compare them to the G-10 used in the Spyderco Military, they feel rather cheap.
