Ok so I have come to the comclusion that I want a new edc folder. The knives Im looking at are the spyderco sage and manix 2, as well as the benchmade torrent. If I get the manix I will also get a new light, the fenix e05. Also why Im kind of leaning towards benchmade for the reason that I dont have any benchmades yet and I want to see what all the hype is about. Right now Im having a hard time deciding. I think its tied for first with the manix and fenix and the torrent, then in a close second comes the sage.

+2 2 new things is of course better than one right? :D

What is making you pick the E05? I have several Fenix's and they are all great light, but I don't have any of that series. I have some PD's and TK's

The Torrent is a fantastic knife. I love its styling and the smooth G10. But I hate assisted opening--who knows, maybe you'll love even that.

The Manix 2 is a great knife as well. It doesn't feel or look as high-end as the Torrent, but it works very well and it's a great value.

The Sage is beautiful and just a well designed EDC. But I'm not paying that much for a knife that isn't made in America. I'll buy the foreign-made knife, but you'd better pass the savings on to me. If it comes down to $70 new, then I might jump in.

+3

For your first Benchmade, I'd suggest getting something with the Axis lock since that's one of the hallmarks of their folders (the Torrent has a liner lock). For around the price of the Torrent, you could get one of the Bone Collector folders (D2 blade plus G-10 scales). Or you could get a Griptilian plus a flashlight, although my vote would still go to the Manix plus light combo in that case.

The reason for me looking into the E05 is because its a one celled AAA with a tail switch and its only $20. Around the price of the Streamlight microstream and the quality of Fenix. Also i just want to try out Fenix lights. I've already had the Streamlight and lost it and want to try something different.

edit: just looking into the light i realized that it doesnt have a tail switch

I took a quick dip into the world of BM not too long ago. It seemed akin to waiting to see the big summer blocker buster movie only to watch it and find out the best parts were the commercials.

Go with the Manix and the light, I think you'll be happier in the long run.

If you get a Benchmade, I'd recommend one of their flagship models over the Torrent. The 710 or 94x series are great, and even the cheaper Griptilian. I have a 943 that is probably my favorite knife, almost everything about it is perfectly designed and executed. A good part of BM's fame is due to their axis lock, so you'd be missing out if you passed up on that. Functionally, they're excellent, and they're also fun to knifesturbate with :jerkit:

You might consider the Spyderco Tenacious. I have a friend who bought two. One for him and one for is son. It is a wonderful knife. I was surprised at how much I liked it. They are priced in the $30 to $35 range I think. I'm sure I'll toss one in my cart next time I order another knife.

You can’t go wrong with Fenix lights. I have 4 of them, and have given many for gifts. Take a peak at the LD10. Great one AA light with tail button. Bright for what it is. Very bright.

i would get the sage first...perfect edc

then the manix

i was not impressed with the torrent when i handled one

If you are going for a Benchmade, try a 710, or the 94x series. Those are the knives that, in my opinion, are the best examples of Benchmade's offerings.

If you go for a Benchmade, I'd suggest an Axis lock knife for a first purchase. It's sort of their signature locking mechanism. I myself pre-ordered the Gold Class Torrent, but more or less because I was curious to see if there's a gap in fit and finish between their Gold Class and Blue Class knives.

If you go for a Manix 2, I'd try to find a FFG version for easier cutting.

I'd personally go for the Carbon Fiber Sage for an EDC, but I'm a bit biased towards carbon fiber knife handles:D.

another vote for the manix and light. I had a sage 1 and liked it but sold it and stuck with my slightly smaller/more slender caly 3. Never seen that BM, looks real nice, that blade profile nor handle grip dont appear to me to look as cut/user friendly as the one on the manix but Ive been known to talk out my butt before (spyderco fan boy) :) I can definitely confirm that the manix is a great user (never used the hollow ground ones though but Im sure they cut great, esp SE ; ) ) Its a bigger knife but doest seem as noticeable in the pocket, atleast for me. Of all the spydercos Ive ever owned, the manix is my go to larger spyderco. Its not as bulletproof as a strider but Id bet my pinky it will out cut one and all steps of its action will flow better (from pocket, open, cut, close, pocket). Good luck with your choice, looks like a win win
