Every Christmas for the past few years the boys in the family have been searching for good kitchen cutlery for the mommy. And every year we come to the same conclusions, cheap bought in America, made in *third world country* crap, or way-over-the-top expensive imported from *same third world country* crap. We've been through good brands and cheap brands, but they never last. I assume this is a common problem to most, so forgive me for bringing up an old topic.

Its almost time for planning Christmas gift ideas for next year and I wanted to start look early. I know this is the lazy mans way out, but right now any and all input on sharp kitchen tools would be helpful.

Also, what do you guys recommend for storing knives? I really like and wan tot get a magnet. Any good or bad ones I should look out for? Any better storage ideas? I'll be browsing the forums for answers.

How about you name some of the good brands or way over the top expensive imported brands that you thought were no good just so there is a little reference point?

Do you have a particular budget in mind?

Does she require stainless knives? Does she or anyone else in the family maintain the knives, or do they turn to crap because they are neglected, tossed in drawers and put in the dishwasher. Even the over the top expensive imported knives turn to crap real fast without proper sharpening, care and maintanence. There is no such kitchen knife that has the ever sought after never dull blade...

As far as mag racks, check out the Bench Crafted mag blocks or lone star artisans.

knives simply do not belong in dishwashers =D

as the name suggests, dishwashers.... not knifewashers. lol.

what about cutting boards you guys are using? end grain hardwood is best, edge grain is doable, never bamboo. poly / plastic boards are okay as welll. just never stone, glass or any other surface that's not wood or plastic.

if the drawers are like these:

then you've done your knives a service. lol

=D

i store my knives in knife bags. i have three now. lol.

I second the comments on DISHwashers. they are made for dishes, coffee cups, pots and pans. The cleaners and abrasives in most dishwasher soap will destroy a knife just like they will destroy fine crystal or china. If you can't keep the knives out of the dishwasher or sitting in the bottom of a sink for half a day, get the person a selection from Rada and replace them every six months.

hey kalaeb, the pic isn't mine. just grabbed it as an example.

my buddy has them miracle blades. lol.
