I've been playing with double edge hunting hatchets. The Nesmucks are too heavy.
I cut this one out a couple of weeks ago and have put it through Hell since. This is the fourth handle it's had and this mortised handle works well.
The Ospho doesn't stop all rust but it's pretty good. I left it in my stream overnight to see what would happen.

I wanted a light, east to pack hatchet that would cut limbs and dress game. I also wanted something to do light digging with.

The stud at the bottom is the digger. You use it like you would a canoe paddle.

It cuts limbs to 2" easily and still shaves hair. This leaves me the other blade for game dressing. I made both edges the same because I can't ever remember needing to split wood while hunting.

The edges are both convex grind and the steel is 5160 with the temper getting springy below the head.

I might make a pretty one now.

LOA is 12.750" and the blades are a tad over 2".
I haven't weighed it yet but it's about half the weight of my regular hunting hatchet.

It's about an inch and a quarter Ray. Ill go out and measure it here in a little.

Looks like it will take a lot of abuse. Keep us informed on your testing. Make sure to post picts when you make it pretty.

Nice looking little hatchet.

I was thinking of you just a couple of days ago I was out and about and saw a $99 whip second hand. I am still looking for the bargan that is out there waiting for me to come along.

Don good to see you
that looks and sounds like it will do all you planed for it.
that is the key, the tool for the right job right :)
nice job..

Shoot me an e-mail Don. I've got a few addresses on my computer for you and they bounced back.

Mark

Nice little package

Looks good to me.
Hey!!! You Ole Dog did you ever use that whale rib bone I sent you?????

I did George and thank you. I made my daughters wedding knife using it. I keep meaning to send you pictures...time seems to slip away these days. Anyway, it was beautiful. I slabbed it first, then stabilized it. It developed a natural sheen that was perfect.

I like that a lot. I still think my favorite thing that you have made Don, was that Bowie from The Stihl chainsaw bar. I loves that thing.

Nice one Don. How about posting a pic with you wearing that coonskin cap and swingin that axe into something? :)

Nice, but I'd like a little bigger blade, but that's coming from a guy who lugs a 12 lb. highwall rifle hunting.
