Another Warranty/Modification question...

So in light of the thread about the Izula scales, it made me wonder if filing the jimpings on my Izula counted as a modification and whether it would be covered under warranty. Kind of already did it, but just want to know for future reference. I've heard of people filing a notch for their fire steel so I didn't really think of it as a major mod, since I just filed the coating off and sharpened the rounded peaks up a little to make it grippier.

I also want to know because I'm thinking about extending the jimping to just in front of the ant's head on the spine, the same size as the original jimping, but just because that's more where my thumb rests. Is this a real modification, or more like tweaking/tuning?

This has been brought up before and even though it's not the best idea, yes it is covered. The reason that making the jimping deeper is that it alters the structure of the knife and makes it a little bit weaker and more likely to break under stress.

Just my opinion, not the official word of ESEE

Oh, right... I forgot to mention that I anticipated that I could weaken the blade by adding sharp corners in the valleys, so I used a round file to keep sharp corners out while keeping the peaks sharper. They're really very similar to the original, there's just a more definite corner at the peaks and no coating. I put a very dark vinegar patina on the exposed metal to discourage rust. I guess I could have asked first though before assuming that would be enough.

As far as extending the jimpings goes, I guess I will take this as the opportunity to ask if extending the jimping pad would weaken the blade. Or is there another channel I should go through to ask that question?
