I am very disturbed as I write this...I just noticed that my Calypso (about four weeks old) has a twist in the blade! I thought the end was bent, but it actually jogs one way, then the other. I noticed it while inspecting the knife after people were talking about the Experimentals vs the actual named Calypsos. Anyway, about 1.5 inches from the end of the blade it is slightly bent and twisted! I can't figure this out, as I have used the knife only for opening mail. Haven't even cut any boxes with it. And I bought it new. I feel horrible about this because I also need to warranty my Endura. What am I doing wrong???

Steve,
Spyderco seems to have excellent quality control (I've never seen one with a major flaw, or even a minor one) so I may be speaking out of school here. I'm just postulating in any case. Sometimes Blades will warp during the heat treat process (any makers out there support me on this-I've certainly never heat treated a blade-YET!). The longer the blade the more likely this is to happen. Do you have the Calypso or Calypso Jr.? Some people would say that a warped blade would go with my warped personality, maybe we should trade

.

This is just one possibility.

Steve - The first run of Calypsos had a slight warp in the blade. Really not acceptable by our standards, but the otherwise perfect knife was too nice to simply "throw away". In an effort to "make amends", we provided extra discount on the knife to the dealers and put a little tag on each knife explaining the problem and the reason for the discount. Some dealers criticized us for the note, saying that the ELU would not notice the difference. We felt the note was the "Proper" thing to do.

My personal model is one from the first batch and I guarantee you will love the design and construction of this piece. Who knows, in the long haul, it may be a collectable. "An unusual imperfect Spyderco". Just kidding.

You didn't do anything. It's a tough knife with a minor factory flaw.

I personally like my Calypso very much, and can't find anything wrong with it at all, but even if it was, it would still be a hell of a utility folder, great for office chores while still looking "dressy".

Yeah..but you know what? I bet that Chiro didn't get that slightly reduced price. I know that isn't exactly Spyderco's problem, but why would the dealer leave that little note with the blade. Maybe this should have been sold as a factory second??? If a dealer thought that the customer wouldn't pay this flaw any attention...why would a crooked dealer go ahead and give up the discount. Most would probably think of this as unique opportunity to make a few extra bucks ya know? I mean...would you have bought the knife if you knew this to begin with??? Maybe so, but I still wonder if the info was passed on the Chiro. -AR

Actually, I didn't buy it from a dealer. I had a Viele I traded another Bladeforumite for it. It was new in the box, though, when I got it. Sal, do you think it will affect the performance any? I'd just as soon keep it, without hassling over a warranty, but at the same time, I will always look at that annoying little jog in the blade every time I use it! Doh! Perhaps I am not even able to get the warranty, even if I wanted it...oh well. I'll have to email the guy that traded this one to me and see if he got the discount...

Steve - I think you should go ahead and enjoy the knife. Think of it as a "Personality trait". It won't affect the performance and you won't notice it. But if it really drives you crazy, Danelle can probably help you out. As I remember, there were about 200 like that.

Sal, I have decided that the only way you can keep me as a customer of Spyderco is to send along one of the Lum Chinese utility folder prototypes. ;-)
