Another watch question....

I started out looking at the CWC. Neat watch and all, but the Marathon SAR has also caught my eye. It seems like a pretty nice watch - designed for the Canadian Coast Guard SAR guys. No idea if it was designed for the purpose but didn't get the contract or if it in fact DID get the contract. Either way, it looks like a rugged watch - plus it is an automatic! I just like that.

Anyone here have any experience with this particular watch? I'd really appreciate hearing any input folks here might have on this particular watch. As I mentioned in a previous post I have had a Seiko automatic dive watch for 24 years and it served me very well. How does the Marathon stack up next to the Seiko? Or the CWC? Any input, opinions, etc. are greatly appreciated. The watch runs about $650, but as I keep these things for a long time and use them, I'm willing to cough up the dineros. I just want to make a wise purchase. $650 isn't an inconsequential amount to me. I'm a teacher.

Something to consider. The SAR is available in limited quantities to the civilian market. They can be hard to get at times.

I've had a couple of SAR's. I would like to get another, but the money is a little tight right now. I like Seiko's, but the SAR is a step above. Of course it should be considering price.

I have no experience with CWC.

Timezone Sales Corner

You may want to keep on eye on this forum and pick up a good watch that is gently used. I wear my watches so, a little wear and tear on a bracelet is a don't care because a new watch would have the same wear after a week or two.

I have picked some sweet deals on Fortis watches there, missed a couple on Limes and, scored big time on a Revue Thommen which is a watch I normally could not afford. The clarity on the aviation related watches is super and a lot of them are good to 200m if that is important to you though, they probably won't have a unidirectional bezel.

Howdy. The Marathon is indeed a superb watch and I have read many top reviews on it. It is pricey though and you can get an equally rugged Seiko Divers watch for around US$200. If you want to stick with Swiss made Autos, at a reasonable price then look at the Tissot Seastar 1000 (300m) Divers for around US$450. All superb watches IMHO.

Happy hunting!!!

Hello,

I've had an Marathon SAR 2002 and it was a great watch, until it developped a "leak" while taking it down to 40 feet (max) when diving in Puerto Rico.
The service by Marathon was PERFECT and what they essentially did was replace the whole watch with a new one and only fit back the case back which had the serial number and year on it.

I replaced the watch by a superior one a Glashutte Muhle SA SAR watch but this baby retails for well over $ 1000

I also have an Tissot Seastar 1000 with the rubber diveband and divers extension and it's a very nice watch an automatic that runs, at least in my watch, about 8 seconds fast a day when I wear it 24/7.
I´m currently thinking about selling my Tissot as it doesn´t get much/any wrist time anymore (never had) and it still has almost 4 months of warrantee on it.
You can´t go wrong with it and it´s a lot cheaper second hand then an used Marathon SAR ($ 250 against $ 550-more for an Marathon SAR)

Best Scouting wishes,

Bagheera

Hi Bagheera,

Did Marathon tell you why it leaked? It looks like a tank!!! Where did it leak from? I am stunned. Well, I guess it happens. It is the third time I have heard of that happening to a Marathon. I was going to get one...now I will go for that Seiko Marine Master or the Tissot Seastar 1000. It really looks stunning.

It costs $300.00 plus shipping, and is a Seiko Kinetic, 200m dive watch.

Best Regards.

Or Omega Seamaster SMP 300
I'll second that. But unfortunately, it's out of grasp for a lot of people due to its price. Mine sees about 80% of wrist time with about five other watches sharing the remainder.

I want to order this watch on Monday, IF I get a favorable response. Otherwise, I'll blow it off.

I will be the first one to admit that I know nothing about Seiko Kinetic watch movements. :D

I've owned a handful of Seikos of the years and believe them to be the finest watch in its market and one of the Seiko's I owned was a Kinetic.

Basically, Kinetic watches are quartz run with about several weeks of charge in them (about a month...different models may vary) without moving the watch. As you move around, the rocking of the watch will charge the battery (roughly similar to the automatic movement). If you wear it often, or even part time (at least once every several weeks), it will maintain "quartz" level accuracy...which is amazingly accurate! But I've switched mostly to automatics now, having only three quartz that I rarely wear. My Luminox Titanium SEAL Dive watch gets the most wrist time out of the quartz watches I own.

Personally, between it being a Seiko and being a Kinetic, I don't think for the money that you can go wrong. The watch you're looking at is a beauty.

The pictures attached show my Seiko Kinetic. It retailed for $600. After having over 15 watches and needing to downsize, I wound up giving it to a good friend. As you can see, because of its curved crystal, it was awfully hard to photograph. These images are about the best of about 70...and they're not that great! :(

The pix posted of the watches from Overstock, were close, but no cigar, I prefer the looks of the Kinetic to the others. The first watch is only watertight to 100m, the second one has an offset crown, which while functionally more comfortable, does not look right to me.
