I started carrying a compass on my person along with a flashlight when I heard reports of the Trade Center bombing and how much trouble people had working thoer way out because of darkness and smoke.
I have a Suunto clipper clipped on to all my different watches and have gotten in the habit of checking it constantly when I am anywhere, especially in buildings where I have to go thru a maze of floors or offices. I take bearings and fix them in my head for backtracking. It is not as hard as it sounds when you ge tused to doing so. And you can get quick checks very quickly without people taking note of what you are doing once you get used to doing so. I check myself contstanly by using the points to work my way back out of places. Maybe it sounds a bit over the edge but I do not mind. It is not perfect given the possiblity of magnetic fields but it is a start at least.
