The blade is 1084, 15N20 and nickel at 5" and OAL is 9 1/2". Guard is out of the same billet and the spacer is ebony.

That's nice I.G. So is the tooth basically Ivory of sorts. And who did the carving of you?

The tooth is solid ivory. It is a pewter casting and all it needs is a beard. Some people say that a whales tooth is the best ivory to work with. I know I like it. :D

awesome IG good to see the knife. so now its time to work on the old salt pot this weekend right? call jerry and see if he has some kaowool. we'll have her up and running for the hammer-in for the HT demo!
awesome looking knife Ig you really need to get a close up to show the blade. they don't know what they're missing. that sucker looks nice hot blued

I c the natives finally got your bust carved :D

nice knife IG,,, But all the whales in New Bedford must be toothless by new aye.. :D

'Bout time you did some work ya old buzzard! :D Great looking blade, did you blue it or is it the lighting?

It's Mr. Ole Buzzard to you Sonny. :D
Yes it is hot blued in a old cast iron pot. Thats where it pickup the gold tones from the rust in the pot.

The knife is beautiful as usual but.....I'm a little concerned about where you got the tooth. If you've been trading that fartigen laden relish to the Indians again we could well see the hottest winter on record! :D :footinmou :D :footinmou :p

BTW, the pattern is stunning!

Good looking knife and nice to finally see that someone found the Tooth Ferry's stash. I've always wondered where those teeth ended up.

IG, that's some serious knife work! Really nice! That knife is so good, I'm not even gonna pick on you. Next time, you gonna git it, though!

Great job George! im glad to see you finished her up...that damascus blade is one of my favorites, that you have made... the pattern, and hot blueing looks kick A$$!!!

Looks good IG, realy like the looks of the whales teeth, how is the legality? I've posibly got a chance to get a couple of teeth from the first mate of the ship I'm on, he bought them years ago, but no paper work.

I realy like the way the damascus turned out, you might have to let your blueing post rust some more.

The whales teeth that I've been using is from a ivory dealer. He gives me the teeth and I make the knives. As far as the legality, this is the way I look at it, it is legal until some one catches you doing it and tell you its not.  :D

That's one way to look at it George but I have a different credo:
It doesn't apply to me cause I didn't vote for the stupid law!
You see, that's much more democratic and diplomatic! :footinmou

Democratic and diplomatic was never my best suit.  :D

George...Great looking Knife . I have a soft spot for Ivory. I've been sitting on a walrus tusk tip for several years waiting for the right project. I CAN'T BELIEVE I ACTUALLY WORDED IT THAT WAY ! Go ahead let the wise cracks fly.
I know whales teeth are getting scarce and expensive so here is a story that will encourage you to keep looking. Two yrs ago this past spring I was at a neighbourhood garage sale when I spotted a beautiful 3 1/2 inch whale tooth amongst a tin of junk. I tried not to show excitement but I didn't have any cash on me and when I asked what she wanted for it the lady said .50 cents. I damn near fainted and asked if she would hold it for me for 5 minutes. She agreed and I slowly walked to my truck and rooted through the ash tray and floor mats and came up with.53 Cents.
The best part of this story is that a good friend and well known U.S. knifemaker had asked me a few months before to be on the lookout for teeth. I couldn't help ribbing him on my deal of the century and sent him a scan of it. I would have loved to have been there when he opened the mail the day it arrived. I figure it deserved to be worked on by a maker of his incredable skill to do it justice.

Thanks, I'll get ahold of the first mate in a couple of days when I head back to the rig and see if he can find them, dout I'll get them as cheap as Jim got his though, he's a knife nut and knowes what ivory's worth. :grumpy:
