Hello all.

I've spent a long time lurking the forums being a knife nut but I don't really own many knives (yet).

My EDC for 10 years ish has been a victorinox huntsman. I own a couple other victorinox knives which most where gifted to me but they don't compete in terms of practicality to my huntsman.

I'm looking for a folding knife which locks open as I've never owned one. I'd like it to be spring assisted. Sadly auto knives are illegal to carry or import into the uk so very hard to get hold of and also useless if I do find one.

So this is where it gets either simplified or tricky. A folding knife which locks open which is also spring assisted so I can flick open easier when I'm at work. I don't mind a strong spring which is tough to open but a fast opener is a must. Also look smart enough to carry normally not at work and also not Cost a bomb . I normally go for softer steels as I chop edges often and I don't mind sharpening more often .

Are one hand open, assisted, locking knives legal in the UK?

Kershaw has a plethora of inexpensive assisted EDC knives. Pick one that tickles your fancy.

Definitely a Kershaw Leek. Comes in a ton of different varieties.
I've got 3 myself.

Check out Kershaw. They have a ton of options that I think would work for you. The Blur or OSO sweet are 2 good knives. Best of luck!

Kershaw Leek or ZT0566, the ZT being an overbuilt work knife and the leek being more of an office edc

there are a lot of knives that you can open as fast or faster then an assisted knife ...

but if you want an assisted the ZT 566 or the ZT 770 would be a couple I would look at ...

I like Kershaw's Leek ... but I've seen way too many springs break or become to weak to open fully ...

thus why I would recommend a non assisted flipper or another knife that opens quickly and manually ... just my 2 cents worth ...

I’m going to recommend a Benchmade Griptilian, size of your choice. I know it’s not assisted, but the Axis lock is extremely easy to flick open and I much prefer it to assisted knives. If a quick action knife is your major concern, the Griptilian is a great match up.

I’ve owned Leeks and a 0566, and I’d say for certain my Mini Grip opens just as fast, plus I find it much more enjoyable to flick open and close.

Good points on Springs possibly breaking overtime and reliability is always a massive plus for me. The benchmade Griptillion is noted down as a potential.

What are spyderco knives like?

Spyderco is especially known for their quality. Plus they have a whole range of options that could be of interest. I’m partial to the Manix 2, but it is a chunky knife. The Paramilitary 2 and 3 are big sellers for good reason. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of their knives, but if you want to flick your knives I’d stay away from their back locks. They’re great knives, but they’re not good flippers as they aren’t really designed to be.

Honestly the Tenacious should be a solid cheaper option too. It’s a great knife, it flips relatively well, and it’s a good bargain.

Mini grip for sure. Very fast on the opening and closing. Can't say about the full size yet but I have one coming. And if you don't like the scales on the grip series there are tons of aftermarket scales available. Also I think you can pick up a good used mini grip/grip for like $40-70. Picked up the full size one inhave coming for $50 and it looks barely used

I absolutely love my mini Ritter, I was lucky enough to get one when they were still in stock. The Full size Grip didn’t feel quite as well as the mini did for me, the full liners do make a considerable difference in the way they feel. Like you said aftermarket scales can help that as well.

The -1 models would probably feel studier, but their Noryl is some seriously durable stuff! That picture is from last week, and my mini Ritter’s been in my pocket for years(currently there as I type this). I expected to do a scale swap immediately, but after all this time I’ve come to appreciate the orange plastic scales my mini is sporting, haha.

I know OP was asking about spring assistant knives but sometimes having a outside perspective helps.

Cheers

They're legal to carry "with good reason"... so no, not really. I'd just carry an s110v ukpk and save myself the worry.

To the OP, I assume you feel you have "good reason" to carry such a knife. Personally I wouldn't risk it, but if you're going to I'd recommend one of the following: Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Blur, Kershaw Dividend, Benchmade Emissary, Benchmade Arcane.

They range from $40 for the base model Kershaws up to $200+ for the -1 large Emissary. I don't what "cost a bomb" equals in dollars.

Spyderco Mantra or Advocate--bearing flippers currently on sale (discontinued) for $115 and $150 respectively.

Massdrop FF Gent $110 (very deep carry, lightweight and not super threatening looking.

WE Practic ~$150

Hogue Ritter RSK MK1-G2 $165 I believe

Just thinking of stuff not previously mentioned.

None of these are assisted, but all open quickly.

I would have a good reason to carry. Locking type blade with my work. But It won't be purposely taken to the shops with me.

I've tried multi tools for my work needs but I can't seem to get on board with them.

Usually I carry for work a minimum of wire cutters, a few screwdriver my sak and a old small sized kitchen knife which is as Sharp as a spoon.

To be honest I do treat knives bad and use and abuse them how they should. So a lock is so when I'm abusing said knife I avoid injury.

But ad noted by a previous poster a spring assisted knife may have reliability issues so now I'm looking more towards manual opening.

But there have been some great suggestions so thank you
