I was out camping this weekend and my blades of choice for the fun times were a CGFSH, Bark River Wet Enviro Recon, and the Bark River Golok.

I used the FSH for splitting wood and all the time found myself wishing I had the added leverage of the FBM. When I was skinning bark off some branches with the FSH I conversely wished I had more control like I would with an AD. I don't generally do food prep, so I wouldn't use the FSH there.

If I'm spoiled and can carry a smaller knife and a larger knife, is there a place for the FSH (insert HR, ASH1, or other mid-size knife name here)?

It's never been that high on my radar, though I still wouldn't mind a FSH LE to go with my other Tiger Hides.

I only have one, a MOASH. It is a good chopper in my mind because of the added weight/momentum. It weighs as much or more as some of my Battle Mistresses because of that thick spine, which also gives it an edge when batoning/splitting wood. Your point about added torque/leverage with a BM is well taken though.

The mid-sized-knife debate is one that has a long history here and over in the Wilderness forum. I too like the large knife/small knife tactic. Right now, in my truck BOB, there's a Battle Rat and a Ratmandu. I may put a Rat Mastiff in for the BR soon. I just prefer the micarta scales. However, when I know I'm going out for a hike, it's usually a BM of some sort and either an Active Duty or the ABA.

I dressed my first deer with a big old Cold Steel Master Hunter, but I've learned that you don't need a big knife for field dressing/skinning. A sharp 3" blade will work just fine. And a thinner knife works better IMO for food prep.

That's pretty much why I always go with two --- one really big and one really small.

But then again I'm not hiking hundreds of miles for weeks at a time, so weight doesn't bother me. Some guys really have to count ounces...

I agree with Eli here!!!

They are terrible knives.

Too big for small tasks, too little for big tasks.

I'm currently working with Jerry on a recall on these worthless knives.

In the meantime, you just can send any that you have to me.

I'll make sure and dispose of them properly and possibly refund your shipping costs. :D :D

I am a big fan of the big (DFLE)knife and a small companion blade which is so far my CR Inyoni but I am still looking for the perfect little guy. Maybe the MudPuppy?.
I had an M6 I did not like at all but my Hookguard was very nice and better than my DFCG(not the DFLE with the flat grind though) I decided to try a good midsize and bought a SH-E but it is not here yet so I am really interested in this issue.

Maybe a midsize is for when you can only bring 1 knife. My Sar5 might be a better choice than a bigger SH or S6 size knife though. It can still be batoned but is much better at the smaller everyday tasks than the 6 and 7 inchers with a wide blade.

I think that the FSH is one of the most aesthetically pleasing knives Busse ever made. But as a user I just don’t “get it”. If you are going haul that thing around you may as well take a SHBM or CGFBM.

You end up with way more blade for the weight.

i like the size of the thing, it's just a little too heavy for it's size. i'd take a large (mofo or CGFBM), medium (HR or BATAC) and small (BAD) knife. why take 2 knives when you can take 3 . . . .

Once I get Ban to work over the edge of my Muddy Mojo I'm going to go for sword medium and small, AK47, Muddy Mojo and Boney Active Duty.

The FSH is a very beautiful knife. I love the HHFSH and the original convex FSH. But in a HOG configuration I may as well be carrying a CGFBM for the extra leverage/increased performance in roughly the same weight.

For me it's the perfect knife. Here in Holland I would look silly using that XL BM, people would stare and some might ask questions. The size of the FSH is just right. People don't bother....

From a sheer user point of view I guess people who prefer the BM are right.

And I agree that the FSH is eastetically pleasing to the eye....:D

I think that the FSH is the most attractive big knife in the Busse stable with beautiful geometry/lines, that's part of the appeal.

True, there are better choppers and better detail knives but if you had to pick a one knife solution the FSH is a strong candidate (along with the SFNO and SARq); especially if you plan to do a good bit of chopping along the way.

I fell for the FSH the first time I saw the Proto at Blade. I ended up with a HOGFSH, a 2007 SE, a Terror Monkey and a SH-E. The SH-E became my field knife and was beaten regularly with great success. If you handle the HOGFSH and the 2007 SE before you grab the TM you would think it's made of Titanium or something. Talk about quick and light with the classic Steel Heart profile, it's a little known gem in the Steel Heart line. the HOGFSH has been no slacker in the chopping department but I have yet to grab it for a day long trek. The SRKW Camp Tramp is basically a clip point version of the SH which, even though it's a Rat, is a 'Camp' knife with few rivals, especially at that price point.

Growing up I usually carried a Camillus Marine Combat knife (7") and a Western #49 bowie (9"). My first Busse purchase was a Basic 9. My second a 5/16" Straight Handled Steelheart. I've owned, used, or handled almost all of the 7-9" family knives. Right now I'm rotating the Jackhammer, Sarsquatch, and the FFBM with the BAD or Rat Warden almost always alongside. The jackhammer is great when you don't expect to be doing much chopping. The Squatch is a good compomise. The FFBM is my favorite by far though. I've had several FSH's and for the weight I'd rather have my FFBM, although I am considering giving a standard FBM with mags a try. If i had to choose one knife I guess I'd consider the Squatch or a standard FSH, but I rarely have to do that, thank goodness:D

The girls are at the beach and if the weather clears off, I plan to pitch a tent this evening and spilt some firewood:) Brought all three (Squatch, JH, FFBM) and my Gransforks Brux 19" axe. I buy American when I can, but I love that axe and there's nothing like the warm feel of wood. But, I digress.

Anyway, if your limited to one knife and for some reason don't want the extra weight/length of the 9" knife, I think the FSH (standard) is the best compromise going.
