The way my luck has been running the last few weeks, I should have known Murphy was going to strike again. I picked this one up in an Ebay auction with about 6 others for $35 altogether. The listing was worded pretty poorly and I thought this was my chance to make a steal. I could tell in the picture that the clip blade had some scratching, but I thought what the heck for the price.

So here's the dilemma as I see it. Now that it is in my hands I can see the clip blade has obviously been broken and reground very poorly. I could make it an EDC just for the heck of it and let it be a good conversation starter to boot, but I have not seen an 858 that did not have the + after Schrade in the tang stamp. Looking for some feedback so please give me your thoughts. Thanks guys!

Chuck

In its' condition, I think it would make a better user. If it was a full blade, and a little used, it might be worth more to someone, but with blade loss, I'd say EDC it.

If it's already used, I say carry it.

Otherwise, set it aside as a "place keeper" until you find an unused example of that variation.

Regardless used or not, that's a nice find.

I'd clean it up. put a new edge on the main blade and carry it daily.
Big knife.

Thanks for the input guys. I think cleaning up the blades and giving it a home in the front pocket is a good call. I actually traced out the profile of my stainless 858 and placed this one on top and truth be told, there is not a whole lot of blade missing. I appreciate that you guys took the time to throw in your two cents.

I think I'm going to tote it around for a while. I touched up the tip of that clip blade and sanded out most of the scratches. Haven't had the time to put a good edge on it all the way around yet. I'll post a pic of that clip after I'm done so you guys can see the difference. If I decide to part ways with it, I'll keep you guys in mind. Gotta try to keep'em in the family!:D

Well, since it has officially been dubbed a user, I tried to smooth out the terrible grind on the clip blade and sanded out most of the scratches. Just because it's a user doesn't mean it shouldn't look good at work.:D

"Made for the Collector" i've only seen this etch a couple of times.
what was the point of this etch ? makes me think: "steel not tempered so don't try using it" although i'm sure this was not the case.
collectors know what they want to collect, so why this etch ? and what other patterns have you seen it on ?

I could not find the post, but Brady was the first to post a knife with that etch on the blade. He explained that there were knives so etched that were released for collectors prior to the general release of the knives to the general public. He has a 51OT with such that etch on it. I ended up getting a used 51OT with the same etch still visible on it. Too bad mine had been used.

I have a 51 OT with the "Made for the Collector" etch also. In fact it had a paper with it from Schrade, which I shall try to find.

For what it is worth, I know Don Lewis, grew up with his children, he is 83 or 84 now, doing very well, he lives near my oldest friend up in Ellenville, I saw him last fall for a little while. Save some gray and wrinkles, he looks just like he did when he worked at the factory. Don is also the engineer who "was in charge" of the part of the "floor" that produced LB7's. It was, as they say, "his knife" he "made it".

Thanks for the explanation guys and for the pic of the neat "Pre Production Sample" paper. now i want one of these too, unused, with paper. ya; good luck and deep pockets the way even "Production" Schrades are selling now.
"We" are the new sought after U.S.A. knife. 'member when you could regularly get an unused 8OT, 34OT, etc. for under $20 ? glad i came on board now over a couple of years ago as the result is a LOT of really nice Schrades for not a huge investment.
