Which of these two knives for EDC: John W. Smith RG-1 Fighter or R.J. Martin Contender? Like the 3 1/4" to 3 1/2" range. Anyone with both of these, or anyone with either one? Which is smoother to open and which has more reliable lockup? Which is sharper (maybe not the BEST question...) and which has better edge geometry? Thanks for the responses.

RJ's blade will be sharper and probably have a better geometry, again probably. The fit and finish on the JW Smith knives is first rate and he is one of the top, very top, folder makers today. That RG-1 will be as slick as they come with perfect fit! All that said, I'd go with the Contender. Not only for the blade edge but also for the overall build of it as it is really set up to be a heavy duty user, not that Smith's aren't. It is framelock vs. liner lock with both fitting as well as any out there so I'd go with framelock as I believe it to be stronger. Remember now, my opinion may be a bit shaded as I just received my RJ Martin Devastator last week and have been carrying it exclusively. Either one will fill the bill for you.

Both models are very nicely built knives, I've handled several pieces of each. I personally preferred the RG-1, but you really can't go wrong with either one.
