I thought this email and my answer to Sly, might be of benefit to a few more of you guys. My answer is first and Sly's question follows that

Good morning Sly. Rolling the sheath for glue up will always cause the tooled area to fade a bit, but being on the top of the fold curve it is not as noticeable to others as it is to you.

Some things to remember though:

The cut border line for a right hand sheath should be 1/8 inch to the right of the center line and for a left hand sheath 1/8 inch to the left of the center line. Any swivel knife cuts in this area, particularly vertical cuts should be no more then 50% of the usual depth. This will keep the cut from opening up so much when the sheath is folded over.

When you do fold the sheath over be sure to NOT exert a lot of pressure in the area of the fold. This should just be a smooth curve when the two edges are in place and bonded. This will minimize the stress in the fold area and can be flatted more if necessary after stitching, but once again with smooth even light pressure increasing gradually.

You might also experiment with moving the cut border line + - 1/2 to 3/4 inch inside the center line either right or left depending on the sheath. This will give you an all the way around the sheath that is approximately equal tooling border all the way around including the top line. The visual effect would be similar to an inlay but with tooling instead of exotic skin.

Your work is becoming amazing!

Hello Paul!

I have a problem and I need consult it with you. When I stamping front of sheath, patterns of stamps are deep and clear but when I fold the sheath for bonding and sewing the bend line (on which is the pattern of stamps) it pulls strongly and crash patterns - only on this area. They are extension and looks badly. I don't know if this is a problem with leather or maybe I make something wrong. I have swivel knife and maybe I must cut grain not deep (as I saw it on your video).

best

That is interesting and helpful. That part about the swivel knife cut being only 50% as deep along the bend... that is invaluable. Thanks!
