Anti-rust fluid -- recommendations?

Hi everyone - I'm new on the forum but have been using blades (monos, scissors, gps etc.) for years. I use them to cut and slice a variety of things but lately I've been using them outside and they've started to rust more than usual.

Typically I've used some home made concoctions for my anti-rust fluid (ARF) needs but it's not cutting it anymore (pun intended!).

Does anyone have any recommendations to help rust proof my blades?

Thanks.

Breakfree CLP works great. So too does EEZOX. Both are toxic however and not good for food prep, game prep, etc. I use them and if I were to do some sort of food prep, I'd just wash well with HOT water and soap and go for it. Maybe even wipe it down first with some Acetone and then wash.

For cutting food, mineral oil is safe.

For general rust protection, I use 3-in-1 oil, turbine oil, or Breakfree CLP. I also use a bit of 15W Mobil 1 synthetic oil in moving parts.

For general cleaning, hot water and a little detergent works well and for a quick wipe rubbing alcohol works well.

I follow the recommendation here: http://www.knifecollectors.org/knife-care.html and I personally use 'tuf-glide' for my outdoor knives. For those that I use in the kitchen, mineral oil gets my vote cause it's non-toxic.

Do remember to clean and wipe down your knives. I guess the rust is getting below surface level. You might want to to take some steel wool to polish off the top layer of the metal.

Tons of choices, myself I use Triflow or mineral oil USP depending on what is closest at hand. The key is frequent wipe downs. Although for storage of carbon blades I prefere Boeshield T9.

I use mineral oil on knives for food and either Boeshield T-9, Tuf-Glide, Tuf-Cloth or Rem Oil on all others. For knives facing the harshest exposures I use the Marine Tuf-Cloth from Sentry Solutions.

I use mineral oil on all my knives just in case I am stuck in a situation where my normal work knife would have to be use with food prep. I wouldn't want to be ingesting a toxic fluid in a situation where my life would depend on what I would be capable of doing.

I think his results are skewed. I used hoppes for a long time, and while it definately wasnt the best it sure was better than nothing. I find it hard to believe that the CONTROL did virtually second best.

Test #2 went the same way.

Which Hoppes do you use? Just the No. 9? Or do you use the lubricating oil? Either way, one is a cleaner and one is a lubricant.

While Break-free CLP clean, lubricates, and protects.

Just because something is oil (I argue about this with motor oil users all the time) doesn't mean it has good anti-rust properties.

Now they have Hoppe's Lubricating Oil with Weatherguard which I imagine would perform similar to Break-free CLP.

I treat my knives with Benchmade BlueLube cleanser. :) In fact, I took most of the rust off of my friend's heavily pitted hunting knife with it+a scotch brite pad.

I use Break-Free (Army habit) but you said outside use so don't laugh. The blades I use outside I stab down into a bucket of fine playsand which I pour a quart of motor oil into and mix well. The fine sand cleans the blades and coats them with a nice protective sheen. I use a 5 gallon pail with the same set-up for my choppers, hoes, shovels and other bladed tools.
