I've been using AVG Anti-Virus for several years, the Free Edition for home users. My online brokerage is offering Micro-Trend "Anti-Virus Plus AntiSpyware" free for it's customers. Is it worth switching?

No it is not worth switching especially if your running vista service pack 1 for vista will disable Micro-trend products.

Thanks for the input.

I've been satisfied with some of Trend-Micro's free tools and services (HouseCall and Hijack This), but I have no experience with their commercial anti-virus products.

I'm using Windows XP.

My belief is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I too have been using AVG for many moons. It works, it updates everyday, and thats good enough for me.

Probably not.

Please see ConsumerSearch on AntiVirus where they claim to be reviewing the reviews - ie: survey and rate all the reviews and come to some concensus - kind of the logical way to do research if we had the resources.

They chose AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 as the best Free AntiVirus..... Trend Micro is rated lower with only one "pick" vs. 4 for AVG.

This is also corroborated by PricelessWare on Security Freeware 2007 chosen by alt.comp.freeware - as one of their 3 choices, and AVG has been on their list for several years - that's why I use AVG too.

Lastly Softpedia listing of AntiVirus sorted by downloads (box on right of screen) shows AVG as the second most popular behind Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7 7.06.00.270 - Trend Micro is much lower on the list (but it could be because it is not "free")

Hope that helps,

Thanks. Lacking a compelling reason to switch, I'll continue using AVG.

~Anything~ is better than that Norton/Symantec junk that comes pre-installed on storebought computers. :)

I would stick with AVG.

I had Norton and it let several downloaders through. :grumpy: I tried a couple of other anti-virus programs and they didn't even see the downloader. I was considering formatting my hard drive and starting over. If you have never done that, it is a HUGE PITA.

I tried AVG and within 12 hours my computer was cleaned up and running great. I have not had a problem since downloading AVG. I like it so much, I may even pay for it.:thumbup:

I would throw another option into the mix.
E-Set NOD32. Ran it for quite a while and was really happy. Was very fast, didn't seem to bog the system down & caught a lot of issues for me. Mind you I was switching from Norton. :D

Not true. McAfee somehow manages to be a lot worse.

If your computer comes with McAfee, remove it immediately. I've "repaired" more than 5 computers this year simply by removing McAfee from the system. It swaps the hard drive continuously doing who-knows-what, hogs hundreds of megs of ram at a time, and also sucks at doing their job more than Norton.

Not true. McAfee...
I agree. All of these are resource pigs, the default configurations are usually a mess (always running and constantly connecting to the internet), and they're a PITA to remove. Plus the whole pre-installed thing is a scam - trying to get people to subscribe and pay money for updates.

Doesn't matter to me though; I haven't bought an off-the-shelf computer in eight years. ;)

Norton AV 2008 is actually OK , and this is coming from the biggest norton hater ever by the way!

All the interent security packages are bad and the Trend package is horrible for 08, 07 was much better. Even Trend AV is a POS for 08 and the full package is even worse.

AVG is fine, if it's working leave it. I use no AV or AS and have never had any trouble myself, but I do not recommend this for most users!

I normally don't have AV software running in the background, but I like to keep it up-to-date for occasional scans. Something happened this week though that's got me running AVG continuous (it only uses about 3MB of RAM), the motorcycle riders website was hacked - everyone who visited got a virus that day.

I do use a firewall always, so the virus was rather ineffective. Still, it was a PITA.
