Anti virus protection?

I'm very happy with AVG. Its free, and it works. Well-regarded. Updates automatically. No worries.

Link.

Yup...AVG...I've used it for a few years now with no problems.

Whats the best free program out there? I'm running XP home.

Here's a useful article -
AntiVirus at ConsumerSearch

The choices of free AV software seems to be -

AVG Free Edition (46Mb - it is now ADware - Pricelessware 2007)

Avast! Free (25Mb - Pricelessware 2007)

Avira Free (23Mb)

Hope that helps,

AVG and Avast are quite good. I've run AVG for a few years but recently switched to avast as I couldn't get AVG to play well with Thunderbird. I have other computers in the house that run AVG and Thunderbird together but something on my main PC wouldn't tolerate the combination. For a while I ran AVG manually once a week and used Threatfire for my on-the-fly protection--see below. Then AVG 8 came out and the email scanner is resident at all times and hosed my email even with AVG off.

Both conflict with some games.

Another possibility is Threatfire. Rather than running a comparison between a database of known viruses it runs and monitors behavior. Yes, most AVs do that too but not to the extent or customizability of Threatfire. Threatfire is intended to be run in addition to a normal AV program and ups the protection significantly.

ClamAV is respected too and has a linux version as well but I've not tried it on Windows or Linux.

i have used avast for a long time after switching from avg because it let me down. it has worked well ever since. you can do a boot sector scan that cleans the whole operating system too. i had clam on another computer and it caused all kinds of problems. it was hard to get rid of too so i would stay away from it.

I've used AVG for years but was having some problems with it and the new edition of Firefox. Couldn't connect to the download server for updates, for instance, and I was getting a lot of "unable to connect" errors on websites.

I temporarily installed AVast, and it seems to work OK, but scanning is much slower with this compared to AVG.
Likely I'll go back to AVG when they get the issues with Firefox squared away.

I've tried a few over the years and I found Kaspersky is one of the best anti virus software around.

I wonder about AVG. I had it on my desktop and some malware ate it for lunch. Besides that, I keep getting popups from AVG saying that the free version is going away. I think it's a sales ploy, because it still works and still updates.

I tried Avast and didn't like it. When I deleted it, I got sort of a nasty gram from them.

I am running PC Tools Spyware Doctor. It's not free, but it has prevented all the headaches that I had before and keeps me from going to bad places.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for and usually less. IE: Norton and McAfee. :thumbdn:
