Hi, I have found this Axe head in a local river. I need help identifying its usage or age. From what I have found through research the Axe is at least 100-200 years old. From the picture you can tell that I have refurbished it by cleaning off all rust, adding a new handle, and cleaning and sharpening the blade. The Axe was found submersed in the water near an old mill in the Hog River (now known as the park river). It was heavily rusted with at least a half of inch of rust on all sides and an old cracked handle still in place.

Thanks for the help,

I can't see the pictures, but was the eye of the axe head a tear drop shape ? If it was the same type of tear drop shape that you're axe handle had than its not going to be 200 years old and will likely be inside of 100 if it still had a handle in it.

I can't see or open your pictures...but I am siked to hear and see more about your find!!

Finding an ax in the river...awesome!!!!

I (my five year of son) recently unearthed an older Collins Legitimus here in the wooded area of the yard.

Needless to say I am now hooked on all things Ax and Hatchet.

I don't know enough about them to put a date on it. I know they were still being produced after 1900. Maybe someone is still making them?

That was my initial thought too of an ice axe. I know that the Gifford wood co. used to make some of the older versions that look very similar to mine.

This discussion of an ice ax...has me curious to go poke around some of the very small public areas remaining of the old ice houses that we're on the lakes near my childhood home.

Hmmmmm.

Great find Biff!!

Thanks! at this point with no clear distinction on the company of the axe, I don't think there is any real chance to accurately date the age.
