I just wanted to share some pics of these two old Filipino weapons. The first one is a Barong and the second one I don't know what it's called. They belong to my brother-in-law's father who is Filipino and has had them in their family for a very long time. They came over to my house for Thanksgiving and brought them for me to see so now I'm sharing the pics with you guys. If anyone knows the name of the second sword, let me know. Thanks.

Just plain damn BEAUTIFUL blades!!! Where is you brother's father-in-law from here? He is indeed fortunate to own and hold two tangible treasures.
I no expert either but I concur, the second blade looks to be a functional (and again beautiful) variant of a "pinuti", a blade dedicated as weapon than for utility.

hi...nice barong sword!

the second one is a typical Katipunan Bolo family of northern island--Luzon, usually issued or made for insurgents and American officers who fought against the Spaniards. from the looks of it's construction, it may have belong to an officer or a leader of a Katipunan rebel. an officer's or leader's bolo can be taken apart much like a Japanese katana for maintenance. fittings are usually silver or brass mixed with gold with intricate designs. a regular rebels sword is fixed to the hilt of horn or wood.

that's a very fine example of bolo...some of them were also laminated steel and would come in leather sheaths with silver fittings also. if it's given to someone with prominent status (officers or popular rebel fighters) it would have their names on the blade.

really great piece of history you have there...i wish i had not sold mine in my desperate needs. i had a couple that were complete examples.

thanks for sharing.

The swords belong to my brother-in-law's father (my sister's husband's dad) and they are from Batangas. I also think the second sword is a pinuti but that's just a wild guess. It has a water buffalo horn handle. Both swords are sharp with a very old sharpening on them which I thought was cool.
