Hello,
I have what I thought was a hatchet but after seeing Carpenter's Axe I'm wondering if that is what it is.
Made by American Ax & Tool in Glassport PA. Head alone is about 2.6Lb. Nice long handle. You really feel like your're holding something when it's in your hand

Regards

That is a very nice A.A.T.Co hewing hatchet formerly set up for left handed use that someone put a double bevel on instead of the usual single bevel.

That is real nice... try typing is hewing hatchet,axe... nice pics too,, how about one more w/ a veiw of the top of the axe at the eye , where the handle fits in so we can see the contours of the steel... does it favor one side or the other or is it centered?

I always like to say "carpentry axe" because the carpenter has more than one.
The question at hand is not all that clear to me. Are you doubting the unity of handle and head or is it a question of what distinguishes the hatchet from the axe more generally and does this one fall into the one or the other category?
This handle seems suitable to its head to me as it appears in those pictures, proportionally. All in all it must be a hatchet, carpentry hatchet.
It's doubtful that it was ever intended or set up with anything other than the symmetrical cutting edge it has on now given the beveles top and bottom, left and right. Symmetry all around I'd say.

I think you're right, Ernest. Most of these hewing hatchets are set up either left or right. But some are set up with the edge centered and this looks like one of those. Less common. Cool.

Thanks for the replies. I've been buying and selling old axes and hatchets for a few years now. I like them because at most sales they are overlooked and undervalued and they deserve to be rescued. I think I've had one single bevel. My wife and I have different things we look for but she pays attention and when I have to work on Fridays (sale days) she tends to cross over. She actually picked up this on and another at a sale one day. I'm not doubting what this may or may not be, I just want to expand my knowledge and I just learned about Carpenter Ax when I combined the two words in a Google search.
Here's the top photos.
