I agree; homemade. I can't make out the coin. Is it Mexican? If so, that might be a clue to where the knife was made.
 
Can tell the coin is Mexican since has the eagle with a serpent in its mouth. My first thought is that it was a bayonet that had been used, but maybe could it be a cutdown saber? Interesting. Looked like some kind of building picture etched on the plate under the guard? Could that also be a coin between the handle material and the guard?

That's what I wondered too, and that red insert. Is that plastic? It's an interesting find and I've never seen one like it (although that doesn't mean there isn't a guy somewhere in Mexico that sells these styles to tourists)
