Antique mall find

Yesterday we went to an antique mall we hadn't been to for a few months, and I found this gem. An older 503 with micarta scales. It's a little dinged up, and I'm not sure what's going on with the blade (some type of electric sharpener, maybe?), but at $3.50 + the booth's 20% off, I couldn't pass it up. I'd been thinking about looking for one of the older 503's, and this one just came up unexpectedly. Thinking I might have to send it in to get that blade back to useful.

Old and new

You won't get that back to the 503s spear point. Nice find ... Did it have a sheath?

Pretty rough, huh? Think I should just have it rebladed? No sheath. I don't think 503's ever came with sheaths, but I'm not an expert on that.

That's a good find at a good price. Too bad about the condition. The 503 didn't come with a sheath and it was not a spear point. Have Buck reblade it you'll have a new knife for cheap. DM

A new knife at a cheap price but you would loose the script markings. The micarta scale and script blade for me would take preference over blade geometry unless I needed it as a user..

I guess I was thinking of 'spear' as meaning 'drop', heh. The one on top is a 503 I've had for a few years. I would like to keep the script, but I also want to be able to use it. I'm not into safe queens.

I'm guessing you already know this but I'm pretty sure Buck will fix that blade up to the best of their ability, as long as you are specific with then when you send it in. Let them know you want to keep the original blade if at all possible. It won't be "mint" but I'm sure you'll end up with something nice as well as useable. GREAT score!

mrszeontestpilot, have a look at my 503 please. It has the original blade shape.
The blade fits into the handle with a distance of 1/16 inch from the tip to the spring holder.
The blade looks like one with a broken and reground tip. Mine is it definately not.
How does your knife looks closed when you have a look at the blade tip?

Haebbie - I don't think it was reground, because the blade is slightly longer than the newer 503 that I have. I'll have to try and see if I can get some pictures of it closed.

Harlycarly - I have another Buck I found at the same mall that I had sent in to them for sharpening, so I know they have good service. :)

Mrs., It looks like someone merely utilized a back bevel when sharping it. It appears all the blade is still present. I think I'd keep the original. It should cut well. DM
