Got a guy local to me selling this, asking $40. Is it worth that?

He's got a few other items I want, so I can probably get him down some.

No, I have no practical use for it, but figured I might clean it up and use it for a wall hanger.

He said it has markings on it for the "Georgia/Florida" railroad.

Thanks for y'all's time.

Semper Fi!

$40 doesn't get you much these days. Up here that'd be a "two-four" of Molson Ex (four 6 packs) and it'd a been peed away over a weekend. All you'd have to show is some dead grass out back and a headache Monday morning. If you want this storied old sledge, it gives you some sort of pleasure, your wallet is not flat, and you've got an eye for where it's headed, then go for it.
Nice thing about the handle being in good shape is you can actually use it!

Patience is (often) a virtue. Tell the fellow you're interested and would happily take it off his hands but not at the asking price and that you're more than happy to wait it out for a month or two should there be someone else out there willing to pay 'full pop'. Oftentimes you'll get a call a few weeks later.
Very few people collect rail way sledges and very few homeowners/landscapers/garage mechanics/hobbyists etc want or have a use for narrow-headed BFHs.

If you buy it, you will need a pile of spikes. Then practice & become good at windmill style spike driving.
You can then quit your gym membership...

I'll second that. Cheapest fitness club membership you ever bought! And where it hangs on the wall in between 'severe dustings' requires much less space than a human 'hamster wheel'.
