I picked up these 3 traditional folders today at an antique shop. One is a a 2 blade Barlow, it is stmped "old cutler" on one blade, and pat. 3,317,996 on the other. The second is a 3 blade, with white inlays, stamped Imperial Prov. RI, USA and 3 patent numbers on the other blades. The third one is a 2 blade Case with wood inlays, stamped Case XX USA on one side and 6249 on the other. I paid 30 bucks for the trio. I don't know much about traditional style folders, I have about 50 modern modern folders, but these are my only "old timey" knives. I've tried looking for information on them, but I can't find exact matches. They are very cool little knives, I am beginning to understand why people like the style so much. Anyway, I would appreciate any information about them, especially when they were made, thanks for looking.

Great score, BTW that old Cutler Barlow is a colonial prov knife and you should post it in the colonial knife thread as bmauser will surely love to see it, he also had an old Cutler ad or two posted there which you might like to see.

You can find a tang stamp chart for the imperials online that you can use to roughly date your knife.

Hickory n steel, thanks for responding. Where do I find the "colonial knife thread"? I don't see it in the forum listings.

It's not a subforum, it's a thread here on the porch started by bmauser.
It's probably on page 2 now as it was just posted in the other day.

Hickory n steel - thank you very much, I posted a picture of the Barlow there. I think I learned how to use Tapatalk so here are pictures without links.

Did you look at that catalog page that he posted on page 10 of his colonial thread ?
I don't know the exact age, but being as it's a modern looking color image I'd guess the old Cutler's are from the 80's .

Knice vintage Case Copperhead and the Barlow although Colonial bears a striking resemblance to something Schrade made.

Hickory n steel, I'm reading through the colonial thread now, post #61 has a very similar knife shown. I'm not sure where page 10 is because I changed the number of posts show per page at some point and only see 8 pages in that thread.

T. Erdelyi- do you know anything about the case? I found a logo date chart but I was confused, the logo on the handle looked like 1950s, is this correct?

It may also have something to do with the fact that I'm using my phone.

Can you get a better picture of the tang stamp from both sides, is there a pattern # on the pile side? Better pics will help in identifying the age of a Case knife to a point. Pre pattern # knives can be contradictory. Keep in mind really old Case just like old Remingtons as well as many early 20th century premium knives are often counterfeited.

When you get a better chance a well lit better focused pic will certainly help to date it or at least get close.

Here's a Case I've been arguin' about for years, I'm constantly bein' told it's an Eisenhower Pen but it's too thin and and this stamp and lack of pattern # stamped in the tang places it well before Eisenhower was in office so it can't be a 06263 Eisenhower Pen.

No dots 1965-69, dots under the U.S.A. than it's 1970s, count the dots at the bottom starting with 1970 there was 10 dots, remove one for each year after 10 dots 1970, 3 dots 1977 and so on. I see the dots between the USA and with the font used it's definitely from the 70s.

Here's a tang stamp chart.

Thank you, I looked at that chart earlier but I didn't understand it. After looking closer, I see 3 dots under the USA, so 1977?

Very cool, I think I'm going to go back to the shop this week. The owners focus was collectable coins and money, he didn't care about knives at all. He had several cardboard boxes full of Buck, Case, Imperial, Schrade, and Camillus folders and ka-bar and Ontario fixed blades. Here's a picture of the Barlow after cleaning it up.
