Went in to a little 'antique store' yesterday. You know the kind of place that springs up in small towns after a shopping center wipes out the mom and pop hardware and notions stores? There was a little basket on the counter, like you used to get your meal in when you ordered a 'burger basket', full of old pocket knives.
I sorted thru them and picked out an as new SAK-main, pen, can opener, bottle opener, corkscrew and punch- don't remember what it's called and an old 1-blade spear point jack knife. Out the door for $3.26.
The old jack looked rough, the blade is thick and it looks forged. Been sharpened a few times, but probably 98-99% still there. No nail nick, you have to 'pinch' it open. The walnut scales had a coupla splinters on one edge. Steel liners and bolsters. Some surface rust inside the liners and on the spring, but no real pitting. Snapped like a bulldog. Oh yeah, the maker stamped his name lengthways on the blade...Chris Wolf.
Thank goodnes for the internet! I thought it was a cool old knife and I was gonna take it home and clean it up! Glad I did some research before I did that.
This is a serious working mans knife. The spring is STRONG. No need for a locking blade on this one. If GEC reproduced it, I'd buy a couple of 'em. As it is, a coupla drops of whale oil on the joint and I'm gonna carry it a while and just let the pocket wear do the cleaning.
