Hey guy's. I recently picked up a couple antique blade blanks that are stamped F. herder & sons (don carlos) with a double cross key symbol. I've googled but came up fairly empty. I know it was an old company from Germany that went bankrupt in the early 90's, but all I really want is to zero in on what kind of steel they are and how old they might be. They are carbon steel I do know that-but what kind? 1055-1095-01 or??? they have been heat treated because they are hard to grind and when I scored a line on one and went to snap it off it shot across the shop instead of bending.
I'm making a small patch knife with one blade. I believe it will be a great blade with fine edge holding and all. I'm just one of those guys that needs to know the details, I hate not knowing the little things, it bugs the hell out of me. So if any of you knife history wizards know anything, please let me know, thanks..
