I ran across this axe at an antique store for $80 but did not buy. I don't know much about this style axe and it was a little pricey for me but I also do not know what I am looking at. it may be a great buy. What are your thoughts? looks like a E. Garnich from Ashland Wisc. Not sure of the Age?

It's a broad axe, for hewing logs into beams, railroad ties, etc.

E. Garnich and Sons was a hardware store, and their axes would be made by another company (like Mann, Plumb, or Kelly, for example).

I don't know about the price, it seems somewhat high to me, unless it's what you are looking for.

You have to ask why you are buying it. Do you just like it and want it? Buy it, but you can buy it for $50-60 I'm sure. Are you wondering if you can resell it? Sure, but be sure of condition and make sure that you can find a buyer. I have seen that size and type go for $200+, but they were in pretty nice shape and in an auction where more than one buyer wanted it.

That's in pretty rough shape for sure, if your looking for that particular type of axe I'd pass and see if you can find one in better shape. On the other had if you want your neighbors to think you're a madman buy it and put it to use on your property...:D

Collectible VS user is a whole different game. You'd be hard pressed to find something like this new and cheap (ie $80) if there were plans afoot to actually put it to use.

Thanks everyone. I would not plan on using this. I was mainly wondering if I stumbled into a rare piece here. And if anyone needed it for their collection. It is in a little bit rough shape. Thanks again.

It looks serviceable witha bit of file work. But more importantly it may have a sound vintage handle. Did you happen to take a picture of the handle?

I did not take pics of the handle, but it is in good shape. a little BLO and it will be fine. However; there is quite a bit of shrinkage in the head...

I'd buy it and put it to use! I GUESS it looks rough, but I don't see anything wrong with it, especially if they would take less. As for the neighbors thinking I'm a madman, that ship already sailed... Tastefully cleaned up, on the other hand, I expect it would be worth a good bit more than $80!

Garnish embossed axes are relatively common in the Michigan and Wisconsin area. Broad axes have smaller collector interest so prices are low relative to what it would cost to make a user broad axe today. As a user though the price is reasonable if you want to do some hewing.
