Had to rush over here and brag --

This "long tail C" Case tested era folding hunter was sitting in a drawer of junk knives in a local antique store, with a price tag of $30. Despite the fact that it's obviously been heavily used, the blade has strong snap, and is still pretty full despite extensive sharpening. This knife was obviously well cared for. No cracks in the stag handles at all, and only some very minor chips at some of the corners.

So what I think I know about this knife is that it was made between 1920 and 1940. Anything else of interest that you guys can tell me from the photos would be much appreciated. Does the shield give any indication of a more specific date of manufacture? It seems to me I've seen Tested era Case folding hunters with the standard oval shield.

Thanks!

Jim

You aren't lying Vince....the stag on the non-shield side is particularly nice.

Great score.....

longbeach, That's quite a find the Rare Case crooked tail stamp was used between 1932-40. A single blade 5165 hunter pattern is a little more rare than a 5265 pattern.
from the pix yours looks to be in excellent shape, and more difficult to find with stag covers, which are in good shape. Congrats on your find, a helluva buy at $30. With the bomb shield I would place it closer to 1932 than 1940 manufacture. To me the knife looks to be pocket carried a lot and well taken care of. It's quite an Ole Grandpa....

30 bucks. You stole that knife :D.

Congratulations on a fantastic find.

Thanks for the comments you guys! And d.parker, thanks so much for the detailed info based on the stamping and shield.

Yes this one clearly had a long and productive work life, and it is now going into retirement. It's amazing to me that an 80 year old folder that's seen this much use can still have such a strong spring. I'm sure it's not as strong as it once was, but if you bought a new knife with spring tension like this one has, you wouldn't find anything amiss about it. Serious quality, these old Cases.

Thanks again everyone!

That blade looks pretty full to me...almost 100%. Very nice find.

I know of no way to date it more closely than the 1920 to 1940's time frame.

I was going by Jim Sargent's 5 th pg. 28 as to the stamp, the bomb shield I've seen on earlier tested and not many late tested, that's just my observation....

Hope my info isn't misleading, sorry for any mistakes and I always stand to be corrected... by the more informed....

I'm not a big fan of those folding hunters but if I found one in that nice of condition I'd surely have to keep it.:DNice score:thumbup:

That is a nice one. Great score, a guy just doesn't run across those often enough.
