Yangdu said that the Pala would really like to take some antler back to Nepal with him. The kamis like it a lot, and frankly, I agree. It makes for some great handles.

She also said she would reward any antler pieces with khukuris. (she prefers this over buying it outright - still has plenty of stock to clear out).

Please send any antler pieces you've got directly to her:

Yangdu Martino
Himalayan Imports
3495 Lakeside Dr. PMB 69
Reno, NV 89509

Please include the following:
  • Type of antler
  • Quantity
  • Market value = $5 per pound (based on 1" diameter, high quality)
  • Your name and address
If you can, please cut any full antlers into pieces no longer than 12", or "wider" than 6" (spread).

Like I said, when Yangdu returns, she will send a free khukuri (in accordance with amount of antler sent) to everyone who has sent some in.

Time to dig out those tines you've been saving. You know Nepalis....they use everything!

I'll be the first to contribute - I've got 6 pieces of antler here ready to go.

This will be ongoing until Yangdu returns (Pala is still in Reno).

edited to add:

If anybody wants to contribute small pieces - that's ok too. The trade offer is extended mostly to those making a large enough contribution to warrant a khukuri trade - something Yangdu has insisted on. (it's for business, not the Salv. Army :p)

Can you guys help me keep this thread on the first page? Thanks.

Aw, nuts. On the way up I-59 from Birmingham this morning, I deliberately swerved to miss a deer. Dents and windshields can be fixed; if I had only known!

heh

I think they only want antler. They seem to have problems with the bone cracking, and not curing properly.

Thanks for the help guys.

Sorry to repeat myself - but make sure these go to Yangdu and not to me. Pala is there with Yangdu's sister to look after him. Packages will definitely be received.

I may have some caribou antler floating around, if the porcupines haven't nailed it too badly...I'll see what I can scrape up....

Bah....a fair amount of caribou antler and a few scraps of moose antler floating around the cabins, but I can't get to any of it until after break up, which will be June at the very earliest.... :grumpy: S'posed to be going after some Diamond Willow in the same area too., but suffering the same delays.

BREAK UP SUCKS!! BRING ON SUMMER!!!!!

Market value? What is the market value???

.

Ok....I'll bite at this one:

For an antler that is in good condition and roughly 1" diameter, market value is about $1 per inch. For anything else, adjust it likewise. Larger pieces, crowns = more $$$.

Use that as a guide and you won't go wrong. Knowing Yangdu, she'll err on the side of returning more than given.

This probably isn't for everybody.....but somewhere out there are (perhaps) a few guys who have a "stash" :D (or know of one) - who will do very nicely with their "donation".

I have made inquiries into 'market value' locally out of curiosity. I think a buck an inch is high. There are many local boys who gather both deer and Elk and I will find out what they say. I suspect a dollar an inch is what some markets and people will pay, but by no means all. I'll let you know.

I have some antler the boys and I gathered and am sending it along without market value as a donation. I get a kick out of spotting antler that may have come from our hands in Montana in a HI khuk.

What is the time limit on this? My dad (and possibly I) will be going over to my uncle's ranch this weekend. My uncle is moving and often has a shack with large amounts of antlers in it. He has had buyers stop by there before and buy out most of his stock though and with moving it may already be empty. I will ask about it and if he has much available I will see if I can get it sent off.

Dan,

I'll see what I have left. Recently, I've been relieved (in a good way :D ) of most of my larger piece's but I'll see what I have left and send them to Yangdu.

I'm not sure when Pala is leaving, but I would imagine that it's at least a week after Yangdu returns....so, 3rd week in May - more or less.

Mark - my father-in-law snagged the stash you sent me. :D Whatever you've got left would be great.

Like I said, no piece is too small, or too large. I'm sure they'll find a way to use it. ;)

Moscow Hide and Fur

Check out their web site. Mule Deer beam peices? 11-12" long, 1+diameter, 8 bucks
8-9" inches long? 5 bucks
2-3" package of two, two bucks

Tine peices
9-10" long .5 to1" diameter 3.75

These prices top grade horn.

This is just a sample.
These are people who buy or procure horn from the field and resale it. What do you want to bet the field price is far far less?

If you want a 250.00 dollar khuk from HI, you'd better ship a very large box of antler.

I hope to hear from my field gathering neighbors later today and will let you all know.

if you go to a certain auction site and search for "WHITETAIL DEER ANTLER ANTLERS SHED SHEDS HORNS" youll find a plethora of cheap antler.
we should all chip in and buy him out...

works for me. thanks for helping with the pricing. I've always used the $1 rule when pricing premium antler, and then up/downgrading it from there. You guys work it out on the antler you can find.

If anybody wants to spearhead an antler-gathering campaign - please feel free to jump and do it.

I've got too much on my plate as it is - would like to be able to hand this over to somebody else more experienced in antlers, etc. (and willing to do it :D)

My interest is only in making certain that forumites understand one dollar an inch is an unfair market price to ask Yangdu to pay, and not to expect that back in Khukuris.

A man in an auction site selling horn is hoping to get more for the horn than the current field market price in his area. Otherwise, there is no point in his auction.

However cheap he is selling it, it is more than a 'market price' for field horn. Making a group effort to buy high makes no sense.

I also wonder how much horn one carries back to Nepal on one's back.

I've always sent Bill horn when I had it and he asked and will do the same for Yangdu. I know many of you do the same. We've had a week's notice and I don't think a rush to buy is smart or would even particularly help Yangdu if she had to pay too much.

I have to agree...at those prices, it might seem that Bill was more interested in allowing us to contribute to the knife-making process in a small way rather than conducting business.

If I had a pile...it'd just be neat as heck to see it come back with blades attached!

Even considering that she "has plenty of stock"...I have to remember that the stock is also her income. I don't need it as much as she does.

.

THIS JUST IN: Market price: Five Dollars a pound, Elk or Deer.

Number one horn gatherer in my section of Montana. Tog grade brown horn- not weather bleached.

The small amount of good horn I'm giving Yangdu by Dan's dollar an inch system was worth about 45 dollars. With the buck a pound price, it is worth less than 15.
