Anvil advice needed

Nice boat anchor :D Watch what you buy from ebay. To me That looks like one of those China anvils (POS). :(.. Maybe someone with more experence with anvils will chime in.

i'm trying to get my hands on an anvil myself, anything would be better than the headstone i've got :footinmou the thing about that anvil though is the feedbacks he has listed (great anvil!! etc) are fake... i dont think they're real. Why lie unless he's using other underhanded tactics like fake pics etc. well, just wait for someone more qualified than me to speak on the matter, i'm just a newbie. ;)

I have seen them go to the extent of purposly rusting them so that the anvil looks old.Maybe you can find a scrap peice of rail track.

If you use RRtrack I read if you stand it on end it performs like a much heavier anvil because all the mass is directly in line with your hammer blows. It would seem to leave you a rather small striking surface though.

This is why the "search" function here is worth using. I posted about this guy and his fraud a few months ago.

He is selling anvils that are from Harbor Freight. He's not lying when he says they aren't made in China... they're made in Russia. But they're made just as cheaply.

You can go to HF and buy that anvil for about $100.

I tried to contact ebay about him, but since I never actually bought an anvil from him, I cannot make any claim to his fraudulence.

I have used good quality O'DYWER anvils made in Australia if you wanted to pay
$399 us + $59 shipping I am sure odwyer could ship you a high quality anvil.

I am not commenting on the one for sale on ebay because I have not used one. Just that I know from experience odwyer are very good and you would get one for the same money. The shipping would be about 12 weeks is the only down side.

Myself and Lloyd harding used a 45 kg model with 8 and 10 lb sledge hammers to make damascus and it held up very well. very nice finish. The horn is much rounder and smoother the surface much better.

If you could get the listed anvil for a good price I have used a german style posibly made in china anvil for years it is a bit soft but does the job.

Look up the webb for your local suppier to the farriers probably get a good one that way also.

After looking at the picture of the anvil the first thing that came to mind was the 110 pounder at Harbor Freight.

Yep, that's a Harbor Freight POS anvil! Made in Russia. HF sells them for $89.
I bought one from HF in Portland last fall (yea, I was desperate!) and had to spend about 45 minutes with an angle grinder to clean it up enough to be useable.
The ASO (anvil shaped object) has mediocre rebound, returning a 1" ball bearing about 10" when dropped from a height of 24" and the bearing leaves a little dimple in the anvil.
But you can't expect much for less than a dollar a pound.

There are at least three different a$$h&*#s scamming people with these things, so be careful.

That's the harbor freight anvil ok. I've used one for the money they aren't bad. Like most harbor freight stuff they need a bit of cleaning up.

I've also used the www.oldworldanvils.com 66lb austrian anvil for $195.00 that's one sweet anvil. It's clearly worth twice what the the Russian is in my opinion. My .02

Here's my two step plan

1.Make more knives, save money buy good anvil.
2. Make more knives, save money buy bigger anvil.

Or have wife get second job, buy anvil.

:D:D:D

You can also check out antique shops and farm auctions. One I have was loaned to me and one I have was given to me. Both are old and had the horns broken off. One looks like someonw tried to weld a horn to it. Both of them have good rebound and work for the little bit of pounding I do.
