I know it is to find an old anvil, and have been looking for a long time, So I decided to run an ad in the "free newspaper", the one everyone gets and doesn't cost anything, So My ad read, "Looking to buy old blacksmith tools, Anvils, tong, vises, ect." I've had several calls and one paid off yesterday, I got a 200lb Fisher anvil for $150.00. The guy said it was his grandpas, and he was about 70. It is dated 1902, but the weird thing about it is there is No EAGLE tradmark on it. Just thought I'd share the info.

Wil: I'll try to find link for the Fishers. I have one too. I think  it said that the ones that were made for the gov't didn't have the logo.

Cool story bro.
I don't know why in the hell this is, but I only want to make tactical folders and such, but for some odd reason, I am totally intrigued by old anvils. I love hearing about them, and especially hearing their backgrounds, and how they were acquired.
I was thinking of running an ad myself, but I don't know much about them, and wouldn't know what to look for in a good anvil.
I'm sure there are many old quality names, but I don't know what they are worth in every instance, etc, etc, etc.
Maybe I'll run an ad myself for one, and then ask you guys if I should buy anything that comes up.
I can't count the times I've needed a good anvil in my shop...

Got lucky again today got a 150lb for $50 bucks, great rebound and rings like a bell, this guy said it was his dads brothers and he was around 60years old. I've got another one to look at monday he says the date on the anvil says 1878, and has a stand. And he has an old blower and some misc stuff. I'm thinking about putting a couple on ebay, or doing some trading. This ad has worked out great.

that was a big selling point for them. Here's about all a guy can stand to learn about'em. There's one down the way from me I'm trying to get. It's marked 1943 and it does have the eagle trademark. Definitely wartime production.

That is a nice find! I wish I had that anvil and you had my electric bill.... :)
And by the way, I'll bet the one you've yet to see, that has a stand you say?, is a Peter Wright. A very classic anvil; I've a 106 lb.er myself. The ones with stands are BIG! Like 350lb. and up.

regards, mitch.

I was at an auction about 8 months ago and they had an anvil on a stand and the thing was huge,I'm talking the face was probably 2foot and the horn probably another 10 inches. I would guess it weighed 800-1000lbs,maby more. Had a cast iron stand was dated 18XX. It went for $350.00. Biggest anvil I've ever seen. If I knew then what big anvils were worth, I would have bought it.

Bring the extra anvils here to sell. Some of these fools will pay $500-$1000, and up for an "antique"(they wouldn't know 1878, from 1978) anvil of any size, and they put them in their front yards as decoration and just let them rot away. :barf:

Mike, do you have the addresses where they live????? :D

George, I've seen people pay the prices I mentioned for beat to death anvils. The things were actually swaybacked. :D
Wouldn't be worth stealing, you couldn't make a decent knife on one, what for all the deep dents, and the bow in the center.

Lots of people with more money than brains it seems.;)

That gives me an Idea:
Buy one of those crappy Anvil Like Objects from Harbor Freight, antique it, and sell for the big bucks.
How does one find such people?

The inexorable creep of Californication is contaminating the whole intermountain region.
