Finally, today a 220# Fisher anvil for $.75 @ LB at a yard sale in excellent condition. after 1 1/2 years look'g. It has 30 on it a a symbol on one side that I can not make out . Look'g for input on the quality of it , is anyone using this type?

George,
Why,that anvil ain't fit for a door stop! Just take it over to my brother's house in Arlington, Mass and give it to him. He'll take care of the shipment to Texas from there, we are always looking for good landfill material! ROFL!!!

On a serious note, congratulations, I am still in the hunt, so to speak. I haven't been looking too diligently, just putting the word out. If by chance you, or anyone else that reads this forum knows the whereabouts of such an anvil, let me know.
Once again, that is great that you finally found one.
By the way, has anyone used one of the anvils from Harbor Freight? Are they cast iron, faced or what?

Fisher from what I've heard is a good one congratulations. The harbor freight ones I have heard are door stops.

I have a Grizzly 100# also. I was setting a brass bolster on it and the brass pins made a indentation on the face. The Fisher has 1916 cased into the base.

If you can get a hold of one, a 1 inch steel ball bearng is the best tester for an anvil known to most old time blacksmiths.

Hold the bearing about one foot from the top of the anvil and let it fall...it should rebound (bounce) almost back to your hand and ring with a high ping sound. This is a test that has saved me many a disappointment at old farm sales and the like. The bad ones hit the top of the anvil, barely bounce and sound like they've hit an old tank hull.

I've been seaching for about two years and while I've found a few none have survived "the Test".

Got the information from Alex Bealers' book "the Art of Blacksmithing". There's a bundle of other great info as well.

All the Best

Heck, I'd just be happy if I could find somewhere to pick up 1" Ball Bearings!!!

Meddle not in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy, and good with ketchup...

I got the ones I've been working with lately from a housing pulled from a differential. Tractor, I think. I don't know if I have any left for testing anvils, though. They keep hatching into knives on me...

Kalindras;

Find a commissioned officer (the higher the rank the better) Marine Corps is good, Army is not bad but Navy is the best :-) and find the little hole that they had their lobotomies done through...if you tilt them just right as you shake them, a few good bearings should fall out. Make sure that it's an adult bearing because the little ones grow up to be more commissioned officers (throw those away...got too many already).

Before anyone starts sniping at 1100, this is an inside joke of any senior/junior non-com I've ever met and is returned with equal force by the brass at every opportunity. Life's too short to get wrapped around axles so if I've offended any senior officers...

That idea doesn't work with Brit. Mil.
I work with them daily and it is a reqirement to hand in some of your bearings whenever they get another stripe or more s--t on there shoulders.
By the time there comissioned just hot air left.
