Anvil hardness question

Is 48.6 hrc hard enough for an anvil? I have a chance to purchase one that's a little lower than spec but I wondered if this is a bad idea.

Stuart most anvils are between 44 hrc and as high as 65 hrc so you should be fine it is just on the softer side. Mine is in the 55 hrc range.

Thanks Mike. The spec for these is usually around 50-52 so it's not too much softer..
 
I have used some softer anvils and one thing I noticed is they seem to ring less, just keep in mind softer anvil means it can swayback, corners can rollover but should not be a problem for you and watch your hammer control so you don't put a bunch of hammer dings in the face.

One question I hope you are getting this for a good price?
