I just bought an old anvil today. It seemed to be in pretty good shape overall with a nice rebound. On one side it is marked 1-1-0 and there is also a 23. On the other sides I can make out a "Hill" and underneath that is "Sheffield." Does anyone have any info on this kind of anvil. Is it a quality anvil?

It uses the English hundredweight system so it weighs 140lbs and must be English made. Could the 23 mean made in 1823?

Thanks for looking.

According to the book Anvils in America, There are two Hill's listed. One is a Thomas Hill and the other is a Hill - Burmingham. The book also says there is a Sheffield directory for 1787 and 1797 for a Thomas Hill(anvil maker). By the looks of the feet this anvil is typical of a early 1800's design. Hope this helps.

The 23 means 23 pounds so I think it should be a 163# anvil but I'm not an expert hope this helps
