I've been looking for an anvil for a while now and may have found one at a reasonable price. It's 80lbs., really good shape, good rebound, has "NC" on the side with an up turned horse shoe underneth. Wondered if anybody might be familiar with the brand and any thoughts on if it would be worth $150.

Sounds like a NC Tool Co anvil you can check them out at http://www.nctoolco.com/

I think it's definitely worth that price. Should work fine, but you WILL want a bigger, heavier anvil down the road.

As a new guy I can tell you already that you'll want a bigger one. I've got a
#110 and in still bounces around pretty good when I get going on it. You can put it on a heavier base and all but still, the heavier the anvil the better.

Hey Rick,
Still a good deal. You're gonna need a good travelin anvil for TrackRock. Heavier is usually better until you need to move it. It's a good place to start.
Now the hammer collecting can get serious.
Merry Christmas my friend!

Rick,
Check out the edges and face. If the face isn’t caved in and there is at least some square shoulder area it is worth the money.

I agree with everyone else that a bigger anvil will be necessary later but that is a good one to start out with.

Buy it and get to pounding.:D :D

Hey Carl,
Yup, gotta have something I can bring to Trackrock next go around. At this point, the anvil is the last piece of equipment I needed to get poundin'.
Merry Christmas to y'all!!

Yep Nc tool. As far as I know they only make farriers anvils. I have a 70 pound NC that I carry in the truck because I am...you guessed it a farrier. I use an anvil that size because sometimes I have to carry it a ways. For shaping shoes, I even use a little thing called a stall jack which is a real light gizmo that I use like an anvil. yep they will bounce but you can carry them.

Still the little NC is probably better than a piece of RR track or something.

I have two 170/180 pound Peter Wrights in the shop but I try not to have to carry those.

Fariers anvils usually have less mass under the face and more in the horn. IMO, that's not even ideal for working horse shoes.
