Anvil question...

Can't tell if it is cast iron, or steel. If it is cast Iron I'd say it is a bit expensive. Grizzly sells their 100 lb. cast iron anvil for $130.

Here is a picture of what I am using for an anvil right now. It is a 4" shaft from an 800hp motor from my work (it was free). It weighs 80lbs without the stump. I managed to forge a nice big camp blade on it, it even has really good rebound. Perhaps I am just better off with this anyways... At the front on the steel collar there is even a square key-hole that I was thinking of using as a hardie or pritchel hole.

If you go to look at it take a 3/4" steel ball bearing and an 18" ruler; drop the ball from 18" and see how high it bounces. A decent anvil should rebound about 80% or around 14-15". My mild steel anvil bounces 9-10". The 75 Kg anvil I tested the other weekend only bounced about 3-4" and the price on the 75 Kg Iron anvil was $239.00.

I would guess that being made in England that it would be OK but these days anything could be a crap shoot.
