Ok, got a good deal on a little Vulcan from a gentleman nearby. It's a little rusty. I was thinking about soaking it in a tub of "Evaporust" to clean it up a little.
Any negatives in doing this?
I've used it on other things that were rusty and it seems to work well.

Unless it's all flaky leave the oxidation to protect the steel. The parts you use will wear clean anyways. But if you insist, use a twisted wire wheel on an angle grinder.

After checking out the SDS and MSDS, I can't see any. But I'm not a chemist, so others may have different ideas.

I would polish over it a wirewheel, then flapdisk to smooth any defects, radius its edges etc. As a second hand anvil, It probably needs at least some smoothing out.
Unless its face is extremely chewed up, thats the most any anvil will ever need.
I know its faff, But I wipe linseed oil onto the non working surfaces. It will prevent rusting and gives a patina sort of appearance.

Wire brush, or flap disc is all you need. A coat of black metal paint if you want to. Some folks hate painted anvils, but I say if it is your anvil - paint flames on it if you feel like it.
Hmmm, that gives me an idea.
